India and Australia will face each other in the first semifinal match of the Champions Trophy 2025 on Tuesday (March 4). The match between the two star-studded teams, which also played in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, is scheduled to take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. India and Australia are arguably the two best teams in ICC events across formats, and they have faced each other 25 times so far.

India enjoy a lead over Australia in the Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup, whereas in the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship final, Australia edge India in head-to-head records.

Ahead of the first semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2025, here’s a look at India’s record in ICC events against Australia:

ODI World Cup (5-9)

Team India has only managed to win five out of 14 ODI World Cup matches played against Australia so far.

India went down by 162 runs in the first-ever ODI World Cup match played against Australia in Nottingham on June 13, 1983, but in the second match played in Chelmsford on June 20, 1983, the Kapil Dev-led side secured a win by 118 runs.

In the 1987 ODI World Cup, Australia defeated India by 1 run in Chennai on October 9, 1987, but suffered defeat by 56 runs in Delhi on October 22, 1987. In the 1992 World Cup match played at the Gabba in Brisbane on March 1, 1992, the Allan Border-led side once again secured a win by 1 run.

In the 1996 World Cup, Australia beat India by 16 runs in Mumbai on February 27, and in the 1999 edition, Steve Waugh’s men secured a big win by 77 runs in the match played at The Oval on June 4, 1999.

In the 2003 ODI World Cup, Ricky Ponting’s Australia bowled India out for just 125 runs in the match played at Centurion Park on February 15 to secure a big win by 9 wickets, and then in the final played at The Wanderers on March 23, the Men in Yellow won by 125 runs.

India secured its third win over Australia in the ODI World Cup and its first since the 1987 World Cup during the quarterfinal match of the 2011 World Cup, which was played at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. In that game, India chased down the 261 runs for the loss of five wickets on March 24.

Australia took revenge for that defeat in the 2015 ODI World Cup by defeating MS Dhoni’s side by 95 runs in the semifinal match played at Sydney Cricket Ground on March 26.

In the league stage matches of the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups, India defeated Australia by 36 runs at The Oval and by 6 wickets in Chennai, respectively, but in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Australia defeated the Rohit Sharma-led side by 6 wickets on November 19 at Narendra Modi Stadium.
