The 8th match of Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz was a record-breaking clash, where UP secured their first win of the season defeating Delhi by 33 runs. With this win, they broke the so-far trend of the tournament where the chasing team had won all previous seven matches.
Delhi Capitals, who won the toss, opted to field first, and watched UP Warriorz post a total of 177/9. The remarkable performer for the Warriorz was the West-Indian all-rounder Chinelle Henry, who smashed 62 off just 23 balls, breaking multiple records in the process. For Delhi Capitals, Jess Jonassen took four wickets, while Marizanne Kapp and Arundhati Reddy contributed with two wickets each.
Delhi Capitals struggled to chase down the target, despite a brilliant 56 off 35 balls from Jemimah Rodrigues. The UP Warriorz’ bowling attack, led by youngster Kranti Goud, who took four wickets, and Grace Harris, who too picked up four wickets including a hat-trick in the final over, restricted Delhi Capitals to 144, securing a 33-run victory.
Highlights from the match:
Chinelle Henry – 62(23) & 1/42(4)
Chinelle Henry played an explosive knock, smashing 62 off just 23 balls to rescue UP Warriorz from a precarious 89-6 and propel them to a competitive 177. She dominated the death overs, tearing into Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack with sheer power. Her partnership with Sophie Ecclestone yielded 57 runs off just 22 balls, shifting momentum in UP’s favor. Henry was particularly ruthless in the 17th and 19th overs, dispatching Shikha Pandey and Arundhati Reddy for a flurry of sixes. Though she fell on the final ball, her innings had already transformed the match.
With the ball, she removed Marizanne Kapp in the 11th over, forcing a miscued pull that was brilliantly caught by Ecclestone at midwicket. Though her four overs proved expensive, her all-round contribution was pivotal in UP’s victory and earned her the Player of the Match.
Kranti Goud – 4/25(4)
The youngster delivered a stellar bowling performance, dismantling the Capitals batting lineup with four key wickets. She made an immediate impact in the 5th over, clean bowling Meg Lanning with a delivery that nipped back sharply and shattered the stumps. In the 9th over, she struck again, dismissing Shafali Verma, who miscued a short ball to Saima Thakor.
Goud’s third wicket came in the 15th over, when Jess Jonassen advanced down the pitch but mistimed her shot, resulting in a straightforward caught-and-bowled dismissal. She capped off her brilliant spell in the same over, removing the well-set Jemimah Rodrigues, who attempted to loft over extra cover but sliced it to Deepti Sharma.
Grace Harris – 4/15(2.3)
It was a special day for Grace Harris as she delivered a dream spell, claiming 4/15 in 2.3 overs, including a remarkable hat-trick. She started by dismissing Annabel Sutherland in the 14th over, with Deepti Sharma taking a low catch at extra cover. But the real magic unfolded in the 20th over.
First, Niki Prasad mistimed a short ball to Chinelle Henry at midwicket. On the very next delivery, Arundhati Reddy sliced a full toss straight to cover. Then, with the hat-trick ball, Harris juggled a return catch off Minnu Mani before securing it, sparking wild celebrations. It was only the third hat-trick in WPL history and the second for UPW.
Jemimah Rodrigues – 56(35)
Jemimah Rodrigues stood tall for Delhi Capitals with a fluent 56 off 35 balls, emerging as their highest run-scorer in a challenging chase. Walking in at 26/1, she carried the innings under pressure, weathering multiple chances to keep Capitals in the hunt.
In the 11th over, she dispatched Chinelle Henry for a stylish four before stepping down the track to loft a six straight over the bowler’s head. With crisp timing and smart strokeplay, she found the gaps regularly, striking at a brisk 160. However, her resistance ended in the 15th over when she attempted to go over extra cover but sliced it to Deepti Sharma.
Jess Jonassen – 4/31(4)
Jess Jonassen was the pick of Delhi bowlers, claiming four crucial wickets. She took her first in the 10th over, dismissing Deepti Sharma, who mistimed a shot straight to Niki Prasad. In the 16th over, she removed Tahlia McGrath, who failed to clear the long-on boundary, giving Annabel Sutherland a straightforward catch.
Jonassen continued her impact in the 20th over, first dismissing Sophie Ecclestone with a short delivery and then in the final ball, Chinelle Henry, who attempted a big shot but found Jemimah Rodrigues sprinting in from deep midwicket for a well-judged catch.
