In an exclusive interview with Cricket.com, Australian cricketer Phoebe Litchfield opened up about her transformative journey from being a hockey sensation to a rising star in women’s cricket. This young talent has already made a significant impact on the international stage, showcasing her unique batting style and adaptability. Here’s a deep dive into Litchfield’s fascinating journey and the factors that make her a force to be reckoned with.
Phoebe Litchfield’s cricket career began to take off when she was just 16 years old, with a memorable debut in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). In her first game, she stunned viewers with a daring scoop shot, marking her arrival in the cricket world. This moment of bravery was characterized by her own admission as “naivety, young passion, and energy.”
Litchfield’s father, Andrew, recognized her potential early on. As the head of Cricket New South Wales’ western region female academy, he encouraged her to pursue cricket alongside other sports. One of these sports was hockey, where she represented Australia’s Under-16 team.
Playing hockey had a profound impact on Litchfield’s cricket career. In hockey, she was forced to adapt by holding the stick right-handed, which improved her wrist strength and dexterity. This flexibility has been invaluable in cricket, particularly in executing complex shots like the reverse sweep.
“The hockey background certainly helped with my cricket. It improved my wrists and allowed me to play right-handed, which aided my batting as a left-hander,” Litchfield noted.
One of Litchfield’s standout skills is her ability to play reverse sweeps and switch hits with ease. This skillset has contributed significantly to her success in international cricket, where she consistently finds gaps in the field that others struggle to exploit.
“I practiced those shots a lot as a kid, and it’s just about believing in myself when I play them. It adds another dimension to my game and provides more boundary options,” Litchfield explained.
She made her international debut for Australia in a T20I on 11th December 2022 against India at the DY Patil Stadium. She has scored 380 runs at a sensational strike rate of 143.39 and an impressive average of 34.54 in 19 innings with the bat for her side in the format so far. Her tally of runs includes a couple of half-centuries with a high score of 64* (43 balls) against New Zealand in the first T20I on 19th September 2024 at Great Barrier Reef Arena, MacKay.
In T20 Internationals (T20Is), Litchfield has shown incredible prowess, especially in death overs. Her strike rate of 174.2 ranks among the top in the world. This impressive form is a testament to her confidence and the support she receives from the Australian team. “They back me 100%. They tell me to express myself and play my shots, even if it’s a bit risky,” Litchfield shared.
Back home in Australia, she plays for Sydney Thunder and was named as the skipper of the franchise ahead of the landmark 10th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). She has scored 1,554 runs at a strike rate of 115.97 and a decent average of 25.06 in 75 innings. Her tally of runs included six half-centuries with a high score of 68 (42 balls) against the Hobart Hurricanes on 30th October 2023.
She represents the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, a franchise tournament in England, where she has again made impact, scoring 450 runs at a strike rate of 130.43 and an impressive average of 30 in 16 innings. Her tally of runs includes one half-century against the Oval Invincibles when she scored a sensational half-century (68 off 45 balls) on 11th August 2023 at Headingley, Leeds, which also earned her the Player of the Match award.
Litchfield was picked up by Gujarat Giants for a whopping 1 CR in the auction for the 2nd edition of the tournament in 2024. Despite being part of the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Litchfield faced challenges in securing regular playing time for her franchise so far.
However, she remains focused on training and contributing to the team while waiting for opportunities. She has played 11 games and scored 146 runs, at a strike rate of 106.56, across a couple of editions with the bat for her side in the tournament so far. “Franchise cricket can be tough, but it’s about staying ready and contributing off the field. I knew I might be running drinks, but you never know when you’ll get a chance,” she said.
It is an ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Year, and the upcoming edition will be hosted in India in September–October later this year. Phoebe Litchfield made her ODI debut on 16th January 2023 against Pakistan in the 1st ODI at the Allan Border Field, Brisbane. Since then, she has scored 895 runs for Australia in the ODI format at an impressive average of 37.29 and a strike rate of 80.99 in 27 innings so far.
Her tally of runs in the format includes six half-centuries and a couple of centuries, with her best performance with the bat for her side in the format coming on 2nd January 2024 when she scored a masterful century (119 off 125 balls) against India at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. She was also awarded the Player of the Match and Player of the Series for her impressive performances throughout the series, scoring 260 runs at a strike rate of 83.33 and a mind-boggling average of 86.66 in three innings, topping the run-scoring charts in that series.
Litchfield is now set to take the stage at the ODI World Cup, where she plans to make her mark. She’s been keenly observing conditions in India, preparing herself for the different venues and match situations. “For me, it’s about enjoying the experience and taking in as much as I can. Playing in different conditions here will help me prepare for the World Cup,” Litchfield said, reflecting on her growth and the upcoming challenges.
Phoebe Litchfield’s journey is a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and passion for the game. As she continues to rise through the ranks, her unique style and enthusiasm are sure to captivate fans around the world. With each step, she reminds us that success is not just about reaching milestones but about enjoying the journey and embracing every moment with grace and positivity.
