Virat Kohli will play his 300th ODI for India against New Zealand on Sunday (March 2) in Dubai and will have a chance to break multiple records.

Virat Kohli scored a brilliant century for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 match played against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, February 23. The former India captain faced 111 balls during his stay at the crease and, with the help of seven fours, scored 100 runs. He helped India chase down the target of 242 runs in 42.3 overs for the loss of four wickets. For his superb show with the bat, the 36-year-old right-handed batter won Player of the Match against Men in Green.

Virat, who has 51 centuries to his name in ODI cricket, would like to maintain his form and come up with a big show with the bat in the Indian team’s next match against New Zealand, which is scheduled to take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 2.

During the Group A match, Kohli, who will be playing his 300th ODI for Men in Blue, will have a chance to break many records.

If during India’s match against New Zealand, Kohli manages to score at least 51 runs, then he will break Shikhar Dhawan’s record and become India’s leading run scorer in the tournament’s history. Dhawan played 10 Champions Trophy matches for Men in Blue and scored 701 runs.

Most runs in Champions Trophy: Kohli will break Chris Gayle’s record and become the leading run scorer in Champions Trophy history if he manages to score at least 142 runs against New Zealand. Gayle played 17 Champions Trophy matches for the Men in Maroon across four editions and scored 791 runs.

Most runs for India against New Zealand in ODIs: Since making his ODI debut for India in August 2008, Kohli has played 31 ODIs against New Zealand and has 1645 runs to his name against the Black Caps. If he manages to score at least 106 runs on Sunday, then he will break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 1750 runs and become India’s leading run scorer in the 50-over format of the game against the Kiwis. The overall record of scoring most ODI runs against New Zealand is held by Ricky Ponting. During his 17-year-long international career, Ponting scored 1971 runs in 51 matches.

Most 100s vs New Zealand in ODIs: Kohli has scored six centuries in 31 ODIs played so far against the Black Caps. If the former India captain manages to score a century on Sunday, then he will become the first batter in the world to register seven triple-digit scores in the 50-over format of the game against New Zealand. As of now, in the list of batters with most ODI 100s against Kiwis, Kohli is on level terms with Virender Sehwag and Ponting, who finished their careers with six centuries each against New Zealand.

2nd leading run scorer in ODIs: Kohli became the fastest batter to score 14,000 ODI runs on Sunday (February 23) during India’s match against Pakistan, and if he manages to score at least 150 runs against New Zealand, then he will break Kumar Sangakkara’s record and become the second leading run scorer in ODIs. During his 15-year-long ODI career, Sangakkara played 404 matches for Sri Lanka and ICC and scored 14,234 runs.

2nd most successful fielder in ODIs: Kohli broke Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of 156 catches and became India’s most successful fielder in ODIs on February 23, 2025. If the 36-year-old cricketer manages to complete three catches against New Zealand, then he will break Ponting’s record (160 catches) and become the second most successful ODI fielder after Mahela Jayawardene.

In his last ODI match for India against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, Kohli scored 117 runs from 113 balls and also broke Tendulkar’s world record of 49 ODI centuries.
