Southampton’s 5-0 defeat at home against Tottenham on Sunday night was the final nail in the coffin for Russell Martin, who had led the club to just five points from their opening 16 matches of the Premier League season.

The Saints currently sit four points adrift at the bottom of the table and nine points from safety in their first season back in the top flight after Martin led the club to play-off success in his first season in charge on the south coast.

The Hampshire side have lost 13 of their 16 league games this season, picking up just one point from their last six matches and conceding five goals in each of their last two matches at the St Mary’s Stadium.

Enough was enough for the Southampton board, who are now on the lookout for a new man to lead the side as they bid to achieve Premier League survival, with current Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl the bookies’ favourite.

The 35-year-old German has a glittering CV as assistant manager, having been second in command at the likes of Germany and Bayern Munich under current Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, winning seven trophies during his two years in Munich before leaving with Flick to assist him in managing Germany.

Rohl also has previous history at Southampton having been Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant at the club for the second half of the 2018-19 season, and could be in line for a return to the south coast.

After leaving Germany, Rohl finally took his first role as a manager by taking charge of a Sheffield Wednesday side who were in a similar position to this Southampton side.

The Owls were rooted to the bottom of the Championship table, seven points from safety after picking up just three points from their opening 11 games of the season following promotion in the previous campaign.

Wednesday recovered to finish 20th in the Championship last season, ending three points above the drop zone, and have further improved this season, with the Yorkshire side currently sat ninth and just five points off the play offs.

Another former Leipzig assistant manager is priced as second favourite to become the next Southampton manager, with Jesse Marsch linked with a move back to the Premier League following his 12-month stay at Leeds in 2022-23.

The 51-year-old American signed a two-year contract to manager Canada back in the summer, which will include leading them into a home World Cup in 2026, but has stated previously of ‘unfinished business’ in the Premier League, and may be tempted out of his current job by a return to England.

Marsch led Canada to the semi finals of the Copa America in the summer, losing out to eventual champions Argentina in the last four, and has won four of his five matches since.

There are three managers priced third favourite at 6/1 for the newly vacant Southampton manager’s position, with nothing to separate current West Brom manager Carlos Corberan, former Manchester United and West Ham manager David Moyes, and former Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
