Piyush Chawla Birthday: Former India spinner Piyush Chawla is celebrating his 36th birthday today, on December 24. Chawla emerged on the international scene at an early age. The southpaw was only 17 years old when he made his Test debut against England in 2006. He played his first ODI during a Bangladesh tour in the next year.
Chawla represented India in the 2006 U-19 World Cup before earning a call-up for the senior team. He was part of the MS Dhoni-led side that won the T20 World Cup in 2007. Chawla also featured in the 2011 ODI World Cup which India won by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
Despite winning two World Cups, Piyush Chawla was never able to cement his place in the Indian team. He has 43 international wickets across 25 ODIs, seven T20Is and three Tests.
He, however, has achieved tremendous success in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Chawla made his debut for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the inaugural edition. He later played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings. He picked 22 wickets in his 16 appearances for Mumbai Indians in the 2023 IPL.
In the following season, Chawla appeared in eleven matches and managed to claim 13 scalps. Chawla registered himself in the 2025 IPL auction at a base price of Rs 50 lakh but failed to attract any bids.

Piyush Chawla remains the second-highest wicket-taker in the IPL. He has fetched 192 wickets in as many matches in the franchise competition. Chawla holds another stunning record in the IPL.
He had not bowled any no-ball in his first 386 overs in the T20 tournament. That lengthy streak ended in 2016 when Chawla was playing for KKR.

Piyush Chawla logged his best bowling figures in the IPL in the 2011 season. As part of the Punjab-based franchise, Chawla picked four wickets while giving away 17 runs in four overs. RCB who were chasing a massive 233 runs were forced to wrap up their innings with 121 runs.
4/23 vs Hong Kong (Asia Cup 2008)
Piyush Chawla fetched a four-wicket haul in an Asia Cup fixture against Hong Kong in 2008. India batted first and set a target of 375 runs, riding on a century by Suresh Raina. Coming to defend, Chawla conceded only 23 runs in ten overs. Thanks to his dominant bowling, Hong Long were all out at 118.
4/69 vs England (Test, 2012)
Piyush Chawla claimed four wickets in the last Test match of his career in 2012. India were up against England in Nagpur. Chawla registered figures of 4/69 in the first innings, bowling 21.5 overs. With batters mostly dominating the proceedings, the match ultimately ended in a draw.
4/32 vs Delhi Capitals (IPL 2015)
KKR were defending 172 runs in the home match. Piyush Chawla ripped through the opposition’s middle order and took the wickets of Manoj Tiwary, Jean-Paul Duminy, Kedar Jadhav and Yuvraj Singh. Delhi ultimately fell 13 runs short of the target.
3/18 vs Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL 2012)
Piyush Chawla helped Kings XI Punjab secure a narrow victory over KKR in the 2012 IPL. Punjab batted first and managed only 134 runs. Chawla first dismissed Manvinder Bisla in the 12th over before getting the better of Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan later in the innings. KKR ended up losing the low-scoring clash by two runs.
