Sevilla vs Barcelona predictions

Barcelona have renewed belief in the La Liga title race, but there is minimal margin for error going forward.

A dismal run of one win in eight top-flight games between mid-November and mid-January saw Barcelona go from nine points clear in top spot to seven points adrift of leaders Real Madrid. But results over the last couple of weeks have given Hansi Flick’s team a glimmer of hope once more.

First and foremost, Barcelona recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time in three months. They walloped a hapless Valencia side 7-1 at the end of January, before edging out Alaves 1-0 in their last outing.

At the same time, their rivals have faltered. Real Madrid suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Espanyol, Barcelona’s Catalan rivals. Before that, Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 to Leganes and drew 1-1 with Villarreal.

All of which means Barcelona are back in the La Liga title conversation. The bookies now make them second-favourites, behind Madrid but ahead of Atletico.

The Blaugrana have moved within four points of top spot, a margin which feels eminently surmountable given there are still 16 rounds of fixtures to complete.

“Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are fantastic teams,” Flick said when asked for his assessment of the title race last weekend.

“But what we have to do is look at ourselves. We have to put pressure on them, but we have to look at our own [matches]. This is not how I want to train, looking at others, but focusing on ourselves.”

The Barcelona boss has also stated that La Liga is his priority rather than the Champions League, despite his team’s superior results in Europe’s premier competition.

With a Madrid derby scheduled for this weekend, at least one of Barcelona’s title rivals are guaranteed to drop points. By Sunday night it is possible that Flick’s team will be just two points shy of the summit.

Having given themselves another shot at the title, Barcelona must ensure they do not slip up against Sevilla. Make no mistake, this is a massive match in the club’s campaign. Only a win will do.

Sevilla vs Barcelona betting tips

Barcelona resume their La Liga title campaign against Sevilla this weekend.

Barcelona to win by a one-goal margin

A chaotic season in 2023/24 ended with Sevilla down in 14th place, their lowest finish in La Liga since they were relegated in 1999/00.

Sevilla are now in danger of finishing in the bottom half for a third year on the bounce. They currently sit 12th in the table, having yet to fully recover from a poor start.

Sevilla are improving, though, and they have been reasonably difficult to play against of late. In their last nine league games, they have only been beaten twice – away to Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, no less.

Meanwhile they have lost just one top-tier match by more than a single goal since the start of November.

Barcelona have often struggled against teams they are expected to beat. While they should get the job done here, there will not be much in it.

Barcelona to score in both halves

The underlying numbers suggest Barcelona are mildly unfortunate to be third in the table. They rank top for expected goals difference, for instance.

To an extent, Barca have themselves to blame. They have been profligate in several games, failing to kill opponents off despite dominating proceedings.

Still, a return of 60 goals in 22 La Liga games is not to be sniffed at. That is 10 whole goals more than Real Madrid, the second-most prolific team in the division.

Barcelona have scored in both halves on 10 occasions and they will fancy their chances of making it 11 against Sevilla.

Garcia Pimienta’s side have struggled defensively against La Liga’s top teams, shipping 13 goals in three meetings with Barca, Madrid and Atletico.

Robert Lewandowski to score any time

Barcelona have the youngest squad in La Liga this season even with the 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski leading the line.

Youngsters such as Pedri, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Casado have all had a big role to play in 2024/25, but without Lewandowski Barcelona would not be in the title race.

No player in La Liga has scored as many goals as the Poland international, who has made the net bulge 18 times in 21 appearances.

Lewandowski is not as mobile as he once was, but his eye for goal and finishing ability are undiminished.

Sevilla will struggle to keep the legendary striker quiet on Sunday evening.
