How to watch Celtic vs Bayern Munich: TV channel, live streaming details and kick-off time for Champions League clash

Celtic return to the Champions League knockouts for the first time in 12 years when they host German giants Bayern Munich tonight.

The Hoops have been among the chief beneficiaries of UEFA’s revamped format following over a decade of European struggle.

Celtic haven’t reached the last-16 of the competition since a 5-0 aggregate loss to Juventus in 2013.

However, the expanded Champions League league phase has allowed the Scottish giants to grind out enough points to earn a playoff spot.

Meanwhile, Bayern have been among the European heavyweights facing a fight to reach the last-16 having had little such issues previously.

The Bundesliga leaders have lost three times in Champions League away games this season but are unbeaten against Scottish teams since 1989.

  • Celtic have faced Bayern Munich on four previous occasions in European competition, going winless across all four in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League (D1 L3).
  • Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last 13 matches against Scottish sides in major European competition (W9 D4), with their last such defeat coming against Hearts in the UEFA Cup in February 1989 (0-1).
  • Celtic have won just one of their 12 UEFA Champions League/ European Cup clashes with German opposition (D3 L8), although that victory did come in the most recent one, against RB Leipzig in November in the group stages of the Champions League.

Celtic vs Bayern Munich: Maeda’s return

The home side have been handed a massive boost by the news that Daizen Maeda had his two-match ban reduced to one on appeal.

The winger was due to be sidelined for the first-leg following his red card in the win against Young Boys which saw him miss the final game of the league phase, a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa.

Maeda played the full 90 minutes in the 5-0 romp of Raith Rovers on Saturday with the likelihood he wouldn’t be able to play here.

The Japanese star underlined his credentials as Celtic’s main man by bagging a hat-trick, and can now lead the attack against Bayern.

  • Celtic have won just one of their last 21 games in European competition against teams who have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, beating Feyenoord 2-1 in December 2023 (D4 L16).
  • Bayern Munich have lost three of their four away matches (W1) in the UEFA Champions League this season. Should Celtic earn a victory here, it would be the first time the German side have lost four away games in a single campaign in major European competition.
  • Bayern Munich made the most high turnovers (120) of any team during the league phase of this season’s UEFA Champions League, while they turned 21 of those into shots (joint-most). Meanwhile, only five teams have suffered more high turnovers against them than Celtic (79) in the competition this term.

Celtic vs Bayern Munich: Team news

Maeda’s return will mean Portuguese winger Jota will likely have to settle for a spot on the bench.

Adam Idah is expected to be the focal point of a three-pronged attack, with Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn deployed on the other flank.

Elsewhere, Jota, as well as fellow January signings Jeffrey Schlupp, and Johnny Kenny, have all been added to Celtic’s European squad.

Bayern are sweating on the availability of both Joao Palhinha and Serge Gnabry through illness.

Alphonso Davies remains in the treatment room with a hamstring injury, with Harry Kane leading the line on his return to the UK.

  • Celtic winger Nicolas Kühn has created 10 chances following a carry (travelling 5+ metres with the ball) in the UEFA Champions League this season; the most of any player during the league phase.
  • Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has been involved in more shot-ending sequences of play (from open play) than any other player in the UEFA Champions League this term (72). Indeed, he’s also the top-ranked player in 2024-25 for both passes completed (689) and line-breaking passes (136).

Celtic vs Bayern Munich: Away kit ban

The away side will once again be prohibited from wearing their home kit in the Champions League due to a design issue.

Vincent Kompany’s visitors would normally be free to don their home colours, as there is no clash with Celtic’s green and white hoops.

However, UEFA have adjudged that the darkened numbers on their red jersey don’t offer enough contrast for those watching.

Bayern have the option to change the lettering to white in Europe but have instead worn their black away kit and beige third strip during their Champions League matches this season, including at the Allianz Arena.

  • Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-Jae has completed 91.4% of his passes made under high-intensity pressure in the UEFA Champions League this season (95/104); the highest success rate of any defender (min. 100 attempts).

Celtic vs Bayern Munich: What has been said?

“I don’t have any doubt that we can [hurt Bayern],” Rodgers said.

“I think we’ve shown at all levels of competition – whether it’s home or domestic – we can score goals.

“We know we’re playing against some fantastic players and a team that’s top of the league and high in confidence in one of the top leagues. But in here, it will be supercharged Wednesday night, 60,000 souls will be with us and we’ll take the energy from that.

“We’ll do what I’ve always said. We’ll look to make it really, really difficult for Bayern and see where the game takes us.”
