Canelo Alvarez’s next fight card set to feature rematch of ‘biggest upset of year’

Canelo Alvarez’s headline clash with William Scull will now be shadowed by the return of Jaime Munguia.

Alvarez will fight for the chance to become a two-time undisputed 168lbs champion when he takes on IBF title-holder Scull in a May 3 clash.

It will be the Mexican’s first clash as part of a lucrative four-fight deal inked with Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh, with the card set to unfold in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Details had yet to be confirmed regarding other bouts on the card, but the event has now been given a significant boost.

Talented super-middleweight Munguia will fight in the chief support to the card, in a mouth-watering second meeting with Bruno Surace.

Surace incredibly stopped Munguia in the biggest upset in the sport last year, but the young fighter will get a chance to restore his pride and secure redemption on ‘Cinco De Mayo’ weekend.

Munguia is a familiar name to fans, having lost his unbeaten record in a May 2024 tilt with Alvarez, where he was dropped and outpointed.

But he is now looking to revive his professional career and is pulling out all the stops to get revenge against the odd-defying Surace.

The Mexican pair have even been training together to help out for their respective bouts, with fans excited by the prospect of the pair working together.

Alvarez is preparing for a big year and will be overwhelming favourite to dispatch of Scull in the main event.

It will be the Cuban’s second title bout, and he will need to mirror Surace’s ground-breaking upset of Munguia.

But it is deemed a likely scenario that Alvarez picks up the victory and progresses to his signed mega-fight with Terence Crawford in September.

Alvarez’s year will be pivoted towards the huge showdown with Crawford, which will see the undefeated American four-weight champion step up to 168lbs.

Victory over Scull will see the undisputed titles all staked by Alvarez, and raise the stakes of the history-defining fight further.

The pound-for-pound great will likely be favourite to win both of his fights, and could cement his growing legacy with two victories in 2025.

Crawford is already over the fighting weight limit, and is prepared to step in and make a statement in the biggest night of his career.

And providing Alvarez progresses beyond Scull, Crawford believes he has the necessary attributes to hand the champion his third career defeat.

“Man, we’re going to see come fight time what my advantage is,” he told Boxing Scene.

“I’m the type of guy who likes to feel my fighters out and adjust to what they’re doing.

“I think that’s my greatest attribute, to be able to figure out every opponent I’ve faced thus far.

“I’m looking to do the same come fight time when the Canelo fight happens…

“People say, ‘You’re too small’ or ‘You’re outmatched’ or ‘You don’t belong in the ring with these types of fighters.’

“That’s when great fighters perform their best…

“I’m going to feel great [at 168lbs]. I don’t need to worry about the weight. I know I’m going to feel great.

“I’ve got a lot of things to prepare on. That’s part of boxing – [meeting] milestones you’ve got to hit.”
