The three promoted clubs have once again struggled with the step up this season, and all of them are currently odds-on with the bookies to return to the Championship.

With West Ham, Everton and Crystal Palace putting some distance between themselves and the bottom three in recent weeks, the only other side these three can realistically catch are Wolves.

Southampton

Southampton have had a miserable season and, having been firmly rooted to the bottom of the table for several months, their fate has probably been sealed for some time.

With only five points on the board just before Christmas, The Saints’ patience with Russell Martin ran out and he was quickly replaced by former Torino and Roma boss Ivan Jurić. The Croatian has only been able to add a further four points to their tally, however.

The recent win at fellow strugglers Ipswich did allay fears of the South Coast club becoming the worst side in Premier League history. That unwanted record still looks likely of belonging to Derby County of 2007/08.

While there’s still plenty of games left, Southampton have a mountain to climb and have looked well short of being Premier League standard all season long.

Leicester City

Leicester City were, for the first few months of the season, the top-performing promoted team, but a recent slide of nine defeats in ten games means The Foxes are still very much fighting for their lives.

The fans never truly warmed to manager Steve Cooper, given his successful stint in charge at local rivals Nottingham Forest, but the club may come to regret their decision to sack him after just 12 games – in which he’d won a respectful 10 points.

While the football under Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy has been more pleasing on the eye, Leicester have been leakier at the back and have also struggled to find the net in recent games – scoring just three goals in their first six games of 2025.

Foxes fans will be hoping to still be in with a chance of survival heading into the final month of the season, as their last two home games are against Southampton and Ipswich.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich have been competitive in the majority of their games, having only suffered a couple of heavy defeats so far, but have struggled to convert impressive draws into valuable wins.

The Tractor Boys, unlike fellow promoted sides Southampton and Leicester, had been away from the top flight for 22 years and had won back-to-back promotions up from League 1. Therefore, staying up was always going to be a tall order for Kieran McKenna’s side.

To their credit, they’ve played with a real hunger and don’t have the look of a side with relegation written all over them. That trip to Leicester on the penultimate weekend of the season may decide whether either side can beat the drop.

Wolves

Wolves sold two key players in the summer, as Pedro Neto joined Chelsea and Max Kilman went to West Ham United. That weakened the team at both ends of the pitch, so it is not surprising that Wolves have struggled.

Gary O’Neil was dismissed following a home defeat to Ipswich just before Christmas, which left the Black Country side inside the bottom three and five points behind Leicester. His replacement, Portuguese coach Vítor Pereira, was able to benefit from a “new manager bounce” however, with seven points in his first three games to lift them above the dotted line.

Matheus Cunha has been vital for Wolves this season, scoring 12 Premier League goals and at least once in each of their five victories. None of the other clubs in the scrap have a player like the Brazilian, and Wolves’ fate may hinge on whether he can stay fully fit and in goalscoring form.

Manchester City

We are still awaiting the verdict of the FFP investigation into the current Premier League holders. Manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of the FA Cup tie with Leyton Orient that we may know the outcome in the next month.

The club are alleged to have breached the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules between 2009 and 2018 and, if found guilty of the 115 charges against them, would have the book thrown at them. The most likely punishment of which would be a points deduction so heavy that relegation from the Premier League is guaranteed.

With this looming, some bookies are continuing to offer odds on English football’s most dominant club over the last 10 years being kicked out of the league.

West Ham United

It’s been a poor season for West Ham who have spent all bar the second week in the bottom half. With that being said, they’ve never been seriously looking over their shoulders and have typically bounced back from a defeat.

Graham Potter was appointed in January, following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, and it may take some time for his style of play to develop. For now, they have a cushion to the bottom three but will need a few more results to confirm their Premier League status for next season.

My Premier League relegation betting tips

Now that we have taken a closer look at the relegation contenders, here are my own betting tips related to the battle to avoid the drop.

Relegation treble – Southampton, Leicester City and Wolves

With the promoted trio all odds-on to go down, as of the middle of February, there isn’t much value in combining these into a relegation treble. Backing Ipswich to escape at the expense of Wolves, however, would offer a nice potential profit.

The West Midlands club are priced around 5/2 or 9/4 at most bookies, but are precariously hovering just two points above the relegation zone.

Southampton to finish bottom

Only a handful of bookies are still offering this market, and that may be due to the Saints being already cut adrift.

They would have to achieve more wins than they’ve managed all season just to catch Leicester and Ipswich, and that’s discounting the points those two sides may pick up in that time.

2023/2024 Premier League relegation vs promotion

For the first time since 1997/98, all three promoted teams were relegated to the Championship last season.

• 18th – Luton Town. The Hatters were the most competitive of the promoted trio and they pulled off some eye-catching results. But they were too open defensively and a poor end to the campaign led to their demise.
• 19th – Burnley. Vincent Kompany’s side were too easy to play against, even though they played some decent football at times. Burnley did not escape the bottom three all season long.
• 20th – Sheffield United. The Blades turned in a pitiful performance over 38 games, ending up with just 16 points to their name. Sheffield United set an unwanted Premier League record by conceding 104 goals.

The relegated clubs were replaced by Championship champions Leicester City, runners-up Ipswich Town and play-off winners Southampton.

History of Premier League relegation

In the first three seasons of the Premier League, the division contained 22 teams rather than 20. In those days, relegation battlers usually felt a haul of 45 points would be sufficient for survival. 

Since reducing down to 20 teams, 40 points was seen as the magic number to reach. Yet in each of the last eight years, 36 points was enough. The last time a team amassed 40 points and went down was in 2002/03, when an unfortunate West Ham United team were relegated despite reaching 42.

1. Which manager is likely to be sacked this season?

So far, six Premier League managers have lost their jobs this season and it’s unsurprising that most of the changes have happened at clubs threatened by relegation.

The bookies’ favourite for the next to go is Ange Postecoglu at Tottenham, with the North London club languishing in the bottom half of the table.

2. Who is likely to be the top-scoring player during the 2024/25 season? 

Mohamed Salah is the leading candidate to finish as the top scorer in the Premier League, denying Man City striker Erling Haaland what would be his third Golden Boot in a row since coming to England.

Injuries can strike at any time, however, and the Norwegian is only four goals behind at the time of writing. So too is Forest’s Chris Wood and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, both of whom have had excellent campaigns.

3. Which team is most likely to win the league in 2024/25? 

Liverpool are now odds-on favourites to win the Premier League title for a second time with every bookmaker.

Arne Slot’s side have been relentless and have a sizeable lead over nearest challengers, Arsenal. Man City will not be extending the record title streak to five-in-a-row.

4. What teams are likely to qualify for European competitions in 2024/25 season?

England could be very strongly represented across the three UEFA competitions next season. The top four in any given Premier League season will play in the following season’s Champions League. However, with England currently topping UEFA’s coefficient table, it looks as though the fifth-placed finisher will also get in.

With Liverpool having almost one hand on the Premier League trophy, their Champions League spot is virtually nailed on. Never mind the fact that they topped the inaugural ‘league phase’ of this year’s elite European competition and could go all the way and win it – which would also guarantee their participation next season.

Arsenal, in second, also have a healthy buffer to the chasing pack and are also still involved in this year’s Champions League. After them, Man City have recovered enough from their pre-Christmas slide to climb back into the top four/five conversation alongside, who would’ve thought it, Forest and Bournemouth.

If England does claim the extra Champions League spot, then sixth place will become an automatic path into the Europa League, alongside winning the FA Cup. If the FA Cup winners are also a top six team (or top five if England doesn’t gain that extra spot), then the seventh (or sixth) place team also gets in (to the Europa League).

The EFL Cup winners are automatically entered into the Conference League. Newcastle are in the final of that competition, against Liverpool. If they win, it would take some of the pressure off achieving a top six or seven finish in the league – as you could still throw a blanket over the entire top half!
