Brighton & Hove Albion v Bournemouth predictions

The Premier League title looks like it is on its way to Liverpool, while it is increasingly difficult to see how any of Southampton, Leicester City or Ipswich Town can avoid relegation.

For neutrals, then, it is all eyes on the battle for Champions League qualification. The Premier League will almost certainly be granted a fifth slot this term, which means the re are three places up for grabs behind Liverpool and Arsenal.

As well as some of the usual suspects like Manchester City and Chelsea, there are a host of contenders punching above their weight.

Nottingham Forest, currently third in the table, are the most obvious example, but sixth-placed Bournemouth are also in the mix. So too are Brighton & Hove Albion, who despite being down in ninth are only four points behind the final qualification berth.

The Seagulls suffered a dip in form in the winter, failing to win eight matches on the bounce. But they look to have got back on track, winning four of their last six top-flight outings, including a 3-0 victory over Chelsea the weekend before last and a 4-0 thrashing of Southampton on Saturday.

It is unwise to read much into anyone’s games against Southampton given they are having one of the worst campaigns in Premier League history, but it was hard not to be impressed by some of Brighton’s incisive attacking play at St Mary’s.

They were equally excellent against Chelsea a week earlier, slicing Enzo Maresca’s side apart for a rare win at the Amex Stadium. Despite that success, Brighton rank a disappointing 12th in the home table. It is clearly an area in which they can improve.

Bournemouth fell to a 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out. The sending-off of Illya Zabarnyi in the first half obviously did not help, but Bournemouth had been second best even with numerical parity.

Andoni Iraola will hope his side are not running out of steam after back-to-back home defeats. The upcoming fixture list does not look too daunting, though, with seven consecutive games against bottom-half teams coming up after this trip to the Amex.

Brighton have won three home games in a row against Bournemouth, but the Cherries are unbeaten on the road in seven league games going all the way back to before the November international break.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Bournemouth betting tips

Bournemouth travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday.

Brighton to win

When everyone is fit and firing, Brighton have one of the most dangerous attacks in the Premier League.

Fabian Hürzeler went with a front four of João Pedro, Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh against Southampton and that quartet duly ran riot, albeit against poor opposition.

With the evergreen Danny Welbeck another option up top and Simon Adingra, Matt O’Riley and Solly March all waiting in the wings, Hurzeler is not short of options in the final third.

Zabarnyi’s absence will weaken Bournemouth defensively, while we may soon see a slight drop-off in the team’s intensity as the season wears on.

There is unlikely to be much between these two teams, but we fancy Brighton to edge it.

Over 3.5 goals

This promises to be an entertaining encounter. In different ways, Brighton and Bournemouth are attack-minded teams that try to be proactive in the majority of games they play.

Brighton are more possession-based than Bournemouth, who are often happy to cede control of the ball in exchange for the chance to press high up the pitch.

Neither team will sit back and defend in a low block on Tuesday, which is why this will be such a watchable contest.

As mentioned above, Bournemouth’s backline is more vulnerable without Zabarnyi, particularly as Iraola may be forced to use midfielder Lewis Cook at centre-half.

Whichever way you look at it, goals are on the cards in this battle between two sides from the south coast.

João Pedro to score anytime

João Pedro was back in the Brighton XI against Southampton and the Brazilian made the most of his opportunity to catch Hurzeler’s eye.

“Today he had the chance and I think he used it in an impressive way,” the Brighton boss said of Pedro’s display at St Mary’s.

“He worked hard for his team-mates. He was very good in possession, he scored a goal, he created chances and that is something we expect from him. Hopefully he can continue in this form.”

Welbeck should be available again on Tuesday, but Hurzeler is likely to stick with Pedro and Rutter up top.

The former Watford man is also Brighton’s designated penalty-taker, so he looks like good value to score at this price.
