Man Utd vs Fulham predictions

Manchester United’s cup form has been the opposite of their league form in recent weeks.

The Red Devils’ 3-2 win over Ipswich on Wednesday ended a three-match winless run in the Premier League. It was a much-needed victory for under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim.

But United made hard work of it. And they did need Ipswich’s inability to defend a set-piece to get them over the winning line.

United’s passage to the fifth round of the FA Cup has been far from easy, with the Red Devils facing Premier League opposition in both their previous rounds.

In the third round, they were drawn to play Arsenal at the Emirates.

Fresh from an impressive 2-2 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League the previous week, United went to London and held the Gunners to a 1-1 draw, eventually beating Mikel Arteta’s team 5-3 in a penalty shootout.

A home match against a struggling Leicester City team coached by Ruud van Nistelrooy followed in the fourth round. United went behind to a goal from Bobby De Cordova-Reid after 42 minutes.

The Red Devils fought back and equalised after 68 minutes with a goal from Joshua Zirkzee. Ruben Amorim’s team then won the game thanks to Harry Maguire’s 93rd-minute goal that would have been ruled out for offside had VAR been available in the fourth round.

Former United interim boss Van Nistelrooy was incensed. But it didn’t matter to Ruben Amorim. He was just relieved to be through to the next round.

With 42 points from 27 matches, whisper it, Fulham are in the race for a top-four finish.

Okay, this is more down to how poor the teams behind Liverpool and Arsenal have been performing this season. It also is not likely to happen, but Fulham’s impressive form under Marco Silva shouldn’t be underestimated.

The Cottagers have made it to the fifth round without facing Premier League opposition this season in the FA Cup.

Fulham started their campaign with a comfortable 4-1 win over Watford at Craven Cottage in the third round. The goals came from Rodrigo Muniz, Raul Jimenez, Joachim Andersen and Timothy Castagne.

Marco Silva’s team were then drawn away to third-tier Wigan Athletic in the fourth round. Rodrigo Muniz was again the hero for Fulham.

Muniz opened the scoring after 23 minutes, but a goal for Wigan from Jonny Smith after 50 minutes briefly levelled the score until Muniz settled the match with his second after 55 minutes to secure a 2-1 win for the Premier League outfit.

Man Utd vs Fulham betting tips

Man Utd warmed up for the fifth-round tie with a crazy 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday, while a largely second-string Fulham defeated Wolves 2-1 at Molineux on Tuesday.

Fulham and the draw

Some might say that Manchester United used all their FA Cup nine lives on their way to winning the competition last season.

They were lucky to beat Coventry City of the Championship in the semi-final, and they then encountered an off-colour Manchester City side in the final.

But no. Already this season United knocked out an Arsenal team that refused to put the ball in the net at the Emirates in the third round.

And the Red Devils then benefitted from a clear off-side goal against Leicester in the fourth round.

Could it be that their name is on the cup again?

Maybe. But the form of both teams in recent weeks suggests a bet on Fulham to win or draw over the 90 minutes might be more sensible.

The Cottagers have picked up six points from three Premier League matches since their fourth-round win. So they are in good form.

Over 2.5 goals

Manchester United’s inconsistent season continued with a crazy 3-2 win over Ipswich at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The win followed a 2-2 draw against Everton in their previous match, which saw United come back from 2-0 down at Goodison Park to secure a point.

United have a lot of injuries. They also have André Onana up to his old tricks in goal, although the much-maligned keeper may sit this one out – to the benefit of United.

Regardless of who plays in goal, United can’t keep clean sheets. Marco Silva will know how to exploit United’s weaknesses, so expect Fulham to be on the scoresheet.

And as we saw against Everton and Ipswich, the United players are fighting for their manager.

So we can expect goals at both ends and hopefully another crazy match at Old Trafford.

Back over 2.5 goals at 5/6 with SBK

Raul Jimenez to score anytime

Fulham’s top scorer in the Premier League this season is Raul Jimenez with nine goals and three assists in his 27 matches.

Jimenez was left on the bench for Tuesday’s win over Wolves, presumably with this fixture in mind.

He has only played 45 minutes in the competition this season, with the striker called off the bench in the third round against Watford when the game was in the balance at 1-1.

The half-time changes worked, with Jimenez one of the second-half scorers in the 4-1 win over the Championship team.

The competition is getting serious now and we expect Jimenez to start at Old Trafford. The 33-year-old will fancy his chances against a United team that has conceded four goals in their last two matches.
