The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has witnessed some extraordinary bowling performances that have redefined the role of bowlers in a format often dominated by batters. These match-winning spells have not only turned games on their head but have also cemented the bowlers’ names in WPL history. From Ellyse Perry’s surgical precision to Asha Sobhana’s historic five-wicket haul, these moments highlight the grit and tactical brilliance of the tournament’s best bowlers. Let’s take a closer look at the bowlers who’ve claimed a fifer in the league, with Amelia Kerr becoming the most recent addition to this elite group.
1) Tara Norris – 5/29 (4) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2023
On March 5, 2023, at the Brabourne Stadium, Delhi Capitals’ left-arm seamer Tara Norris made history by claiming the tournament’s first five-wicket haul, recording figures of 5 for 29 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. After Delhi Capitals posted a formidable total of 223/2, Norris’s introduction into the attack proved pivotal. She initiated a collapse by dismissing Ellyse Perry, who chopped onto her stumps, and then had Disha Kasat caught at deep backward square leg in the same over.
Norris continued her dominance by removing Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja in successive deliveries, putting her on a hat-trick. Although she missed the hat-trick, she later dismissed Heather Knight, who lofted a catch to extra cover, securing her five-wicket haul. Norris’s exceptional spell shined bright in Delhi Capitals’ comprehensive 60-run victory.
2) Kim Garth – 5/36 (4) vs UP Warriorz, 2023
On March 5, 2023, at the DY Patil Stadium, Gujarat Giants’ pacer Kim Garth delivered a sensational performance, taking 5 wickets for 36 runs against UP Warriorz. Defending a target of 170, Garth’s early burst rattled the Warriorz’s top order.
In her opening spell, she dismissed Alyssa Healy, Shweta Sehrawat, and Tahlia McGrath, all in the 3rd over of the game, reducing the Warriorz to 20/3. Garth returned to the attack to remove the well-set Kiran Navgire, who had scored 53, and then bowled Simran Shaikh with a precise yorker, completing her five-wicket haul. Despite Garth’s heroics, the Warriorz managed a thrilling chase, with Grace Harris and Sophie Ecclestone guiding them to victory.
3) Marizanne Kapp – 5/15 (4) vs Gujarat Giants, 2023
Marizanne Kapp’s 5 for 15 against Gujarat Giants was a masterclass in seam bowling, triggering a dramatic batting collapse. Kapp bowled four straight overs with the new ball after Gujarat opted to bat at the DY Patil Stadium. She knocked back Sabbhineni Meghana’s off stump with the second delivery of the match. In her second over, Kapp delivered a fine inswinger to Laura Wolvaardt, who played all over it to be bowled. She produced a similar ball to trap the dangerous Ashleigh Gardner in front.
Harleen Deol, who had played two impressive knocks back-to-back and was off to a good start again, was dismissed leg-before by Kapp with a clever off-cutter. Sushma Verma was bowled soon after. Three batters bowled and trapped in front was a reward for Kapp attacking the stumps with smart variations. She claimed 5/15, her best in the tournament so far, which reduced GG to 33/6 in 6.5 overs.
4) Asha Sobhana – 5/22 vs UP Warriorz, 2024
In a thrilling WPL match on February 24, 2024, leg-spinner Asha Sobhana delivered a historic performance for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against the UP Warriorz at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Defending a target of 158, RCB faced a challenging situation as the Warriorz reached 116 for 3 in the 15th over, with Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat building a formidable 77-run partnership. Captain Smriti Mandhana turned to Sobhana to break this stand, and she rose to the occasion spectacularly.
In the 17th over, Sobhana dismissed Sehrawat, followed by the crucial wicket of Harris on the next delivery, and then trapped Kiran Navgire leg-before, completing a remarkable triple-wicket over to complete her five-fer. Earlier in her spell, she had removed Vrinda Dinesh and Tahlia McGrath. Her figures of 5 for 22 not only derailed the Warriorz’s chase but also made her the first Indian to achieve a five-wicket haul in WPL history.
5) Ellyse Perry – 6/15 vs Mumbai Indians, 2024
Ellyse Perry’s 6 for 15 against Mumbai Indians is one of the most memorable performances in WPL history. The carnage began in Perry’s second over, the ninth of the game. Sajeevan Sajana, who had raced to 30 off 20 balls, was cleaned up wafting at one that took her inside edge and thudded into the off stump. Next came a length ball well outside off that Harmanpreet Kaur inside-edged back onto her stumps. Amelia Kerr denied Perry a hat-trick on her next ball, but she couldn’t keep her out for long. On the first ball of her next over, Perry pinged her on her back pad.
Two balls later, she cleaned up Amanjot Kaur with a peach of an in-dipper. Six balls on, Pooja Vastrakar played all around another inswinger that sent her off stump reeling, and Perry had five. But she still had three balls left, the last of which she used to trap Nat Sciver-Brunt lbw. By the time she was done, Mumbai had collapsed from 65 for 1 to 82 for 7. Perry’s figures were the first six-fer in the WPL, and they helped RCB get a foot in through the playoffs’ door.
6) Amelia Kerr – 5/38 (4) vs UP Warriorz, 2025
Although widely celebrated for her batting exploits, Amelia Kerr’s bowling prowess also deserves equal recognition. Her recent exploits include her maiden WPL fifer against in the WPL. Bowling first, Mumbai Indians restricted the UP Warriorz’s to 150 runs, with Kerr taking 5 for 38. Kerr launched an attack from her side in the 10th over as she got rid of Kiran Navgire, who was dismissed for a two-ball duck.
After Navgire, Kerr went on to claim the crucial scalps of Vrinda Dinesh and Chinelle Henry two balls apart, and then captain Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone in the final over, to finish with figures of 5/39. Riding on Kerr’s superb performance, Mumbai Indians halted UP Warriorz at a total of 150/9, a score that proved match winning. The 24-year-old’s magnificent bowling against UP Warriorz has made her the sixth player to grab a five-wicket haul in WPL history, and the first for Mumbai Indians.
