Stats and records for races as the horse racing meeting returns

Established in 1860 and first held in the town the following year, the Cheltenham Festival is about to return with four days of thrilling action for horse racing fans.

The festival has been held over four days since 2005, with an average daily attendance of 65,000, rising to 71,500 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

That race is one of five feature events alongside the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Champion Hurdle, Ryanair Chase and Stayers’ Hurdle.

You can find out all you need to know about Cheltenham Festival 2025 in 101GreatGoals.com’s guide, and read on for a selection of statistics and records for each race taking place this year, including clues on what to look out for among the fields.

Cheltenham Festival races: Tuesday, March 11

13:20: Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

  • Eleven of the last 12 winners have been five or six, which could give an added incentive to back favourite Kopek Des Bordes and second-favourite Romeo Coolio.
  • Willie Mullins, who has won on seven occasions and trained nine of the last 11 favourites, is in the mix again with the likes of Kopek Des Bordes and fifth-favourite Salvator Mundi.
  • Beware of Kopek Des Bordes as the hot favourite, though: 11 of the last 15 favourites at 2-1 or shorter in the race were beaten.
  • That said, four of the last 12 winners were favourites or joint favourites, and all but one were in the betting top three. Henry De Bromhead’s Workahead could be the third-favourite this time aroud.
  • Five of the last 12 winners ran in the Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on their last run, winning in four instances; Kopek Des Bordes won the race this year.

14:00: Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase

  • Fourteen of the last 21 winners of the chase won their previous race or finished placed.
  • Mullins and Nicky Henderson have shared 10 of the last 13 winners, and the former’s Majborough is the odds-on favourite.
  • Favouritism needn’t jinx Majborough, because 10 of the last 13 favourites and joint-favourites justified that status.
  • Majborough could become the first five-year-old to win the Arkle since Voy Pour Ustedes in 2006.
  • At the age of nine, San Salvador could match the oldest Arkle winners: Sir Ken (1956) and Danish Flight (1998).

14:40: Ultima Handicap Chase

  • Since 1946, the two leading trainers have four wins each: Fred Rimell, between 1948 and 1954, and Fulke Walwyn, from 1961 to 1977.
  • Novices have won eight times since 2004, producing all of the top three last year.
  • The last two winners – Corach Rambler in 2023 and Chianti Classico in 2024 – ended a 10-year run of favourites or joint-favourites not winning.
  • Ten of the last 12 winners had a rating of 140 or higher, which is a good omen for favourite The Changing Man and second-favourite Broadway Boy, as well as the likes of Henry’s Friend further down the odds.
  • Five of the last ten winners had run in the Coral Gold Cup, in which Broadway Boy most recently came second despite a mistake in the home straight.

15:20: Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle

  • Quevega accumulated the most consecutive wins in a Cheltenham race by winning the Mares’ Hurdle six times between 2009 and 2014.
  • Six of those were for Mullins, who has produced 10 of the 16 winners. Favourite Lossiemouth and second-favourite Jade De Grugy are his, as are the likes of outsider Gala Marceau.
  • Ruby Walsh was the jockey in each of those years and is the most successful in the history of the race, also winning with Vroum Vroum Mag in 2016 and Benie Des Dieux in 2018.
  • Lossiemouth won last year and Mullins’ record of four runners-up means it would not be a surprise to see the top two go with the odds.
  • Nine of the last 12 winners won their previous run.

16:00: Unibet Champion Hurdle

  • The last 10 winners were all unbeaten that season, as is the case for favourite Constitution Hill and second-favourite Brighterdaysahead.
  • From 1961 until 1979 the race was held on Wednesday, except in 1964 when it took place on Friday.
  • Constitution Hill is likely to be a slightly longer odds-on favourite than he was when he won in 2023, having been withdrawn in 2024.
  • Eleven of the last 12 winners had at least one previous run at Cheltenham, with eight claiming at least one win.
  • 2019 winner Espoir d’Allen is one of only two five-year-olds to have triumphed since 1985. Constitution Hill is eight, while Brighterdaysahead is six.

16:40: Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

  • Gordon Elliott is the most successful trainer in the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle thanks to wins with Flaxen Flare (2013), Veneer of Charm (2018), Aramax (2020), Jazzy Matty (2023). His shortest-priced runner in 2025 is likely to be long shot Wendrock.
  • Seven of the last 13 winners have been priced longer than 25/1.
  • Diego Du Charmil ran the quickest race of the last 20 editions, with 3:49.40 in 2016.
  • Fifteen of the last 20 winners have won no more than once over hurdles.
  • Thirteen of the last 20 winners were at least 11 stone – as is the case for all of the five favourites except Beyond your Dreams (10st 13lb).

17:20: National Hunt Chase

  • The National Hunt Chase has been run more times than any other Cheltenham Festival race and is in its 165th year.
  • Mullins has trained 103 winners at the festival but never triumphed in a handicap chase, so he may be holding his greatest hopes out for fourth-favourite Captain Cody here.
  • Nine of the last 12 winners were aged between six and eight. Only David Pipe’s Gericault Roque, who is nine, does not fit that bill among the shortest-priced.
  • Five and six-year-olds have fared particularly poorly in the race since 1989, so it would be even more of a surprise if the likes of Aworkinprogress win.
  • Fourteen of the last 16 winners were no shorter than 12/1.

Cheltenham Festival races: Wednesday, March 12

13:20: Turners Novices’ Hurdle

  • Irish-trained runners made up the top five last year and the top four the year before.
  • Eighteen of the last 20 winners have come from the top four in the betting.
  • Nine of the last 12 winners were six, although Impaire et Passe in 2023 was five and Sir Gerhard the previous year was seven. All of the five favourites this year are six-year-olds.
  • Only three of the last 37 winners have been outside the top five in the betting.
  • Mullins has trained five of the last 12 winners and each of the last three, although Final Demand is second-favourite behind Dan Skelton’s The New Lion.

14:00: Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase

  • Nine of the last 10 winners came from the top three in the betting market – potentially good news for Ballyburn, Dancing City and Better Days Ahead.
  • Mullins, whose runners include Ballyburn and Dancing City, has won the chase six times and had three runners-up.
  • Second-favourite Dancing City is the only runner who is yet to be beaten over fences.
  • Eight of the last 12 winners won on their last run.
  • The likes of Mullins’ Quai De Bourbon are aiming to become only the fifth winners aged under seven since 1978.

14:40 Coral Cup Hurdle

  • Established in 1993, the hurdle gave its inaugural winner, Olympian, a bonus prize of £50,000 for winning the Imperial Cup the previous weekend.
  • Be Aware is targeting a hat-trick of wins for Skelton, who has won the last two editions of the hurdle with Langer Dan.
  • Being favourite may count against Be Aware: Henderson’s Dame De Compagnie is the only winning favourite in the last 21 years, triumphing in 2020.
  • Eleven of the last 15 winners didn’t win last time out.
  • Mullins won the race in 2018, but only two of his 53 runners overall have placed inside the top two.

15:20: Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase

  • Of the 281 runners in the chase, only seven have fallen – two of which were during the first running.
  • Trainer Elliott, whose runners include second-favourite Galvin, has won five of the last seven editions.
  • Nine of the last 11 winners had a rating of 142 or higher, which could bode poorly for Elliott’s Gevrey.
  • The most successful jockeys are Nina Carberry, who prevailed four times between 2007 and 2016, and Keith Donoghue, who matched that tally between 2018 and 2023.
  • Six of the last eight winners wore headgear and all of the last nine Irish-trained winners wore tongue ties.

16:00: BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase

  • Two-time winner Energumene is hoping to become only the second horse older than 10 to triumph since 1978, joining Moscow Flyer.
  • Henderson, who trains odds-on favourite Jonbon, has won five of the last 13 races.
  • Henderson and Paul Nicholls have won 11 of the last 25.
  • Jonbon is unbeaten in five runs since missing last season’s Champion Chase.
  • As the field reflects, there have only been three winners aged six or younger over the last 50 years.

16:40: Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase

  • First run in April 1934, the Grand Annual is the oldest race at Cheltenham and the oldest chase on the National Hunt calendar.
  • Eleven of the past 14 winners have had an official rating of between 138 and 147, which could encourage backers of the likes of Unexpected Party and The King of Prs.
  • Should Unexpected Party win, he will join Top Twenty in the 1950s and Dulwich in the 1970s as back-to-back winners.
  • There have been 10 double-figure priced winners since 2006.
  • Twelve of the last 16 winners were novices or second season chasers.

17.20: Weatherbys Champion Bumper

  • Katie Walsh became the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race at Cheltenham when she won the Champion Bumper in 2018.
  • The Leopardstown Christmas Meeting is a useful form guide, producing eight Champion Bumper winners.
  • Mullins, who has won four of the last five bumpers, has runners including favourite Copacabana and second-favourite Gameofinches.
  • Twenty-three of the last 32 winners have come from the top six in the betting.
  • Four-year-olds have a very poor record in the race since 2000, so the likes of Caballero Cliff, Tradonthebay and Lancelot Allen are among the outsiders.

Cheltenham Festival races: Thursday, March 13

13:20: Mares Novices’ Hurdle

  • Six of the last nine winners of the Mares Novices’ Hurdle have been Irish-trained, but the last three have been British-trained. Irish-trained runners dominate the favourites this time, but the Paul Nicholls-trained Jubilee Alpha is considered a contender.
  • The last nine winners have all been aged five or six. Third-favourite Galileo Dome is four and Aurora Vega is seven.
  • The last six favourites have been beaten, five of which started at under 3/1.
  • Mullins runners further down the odds could be worth considering: his winner in 2019, Eglantine Du Seuil, had been 50/1, with runner-up Concertista 66/1.
  • Mullins won the first five editions but Henry de Bromhead, Harry Fry, Jamie Snowden and Jeremy Scott have won the last four.

14:00: Jack Richards Novices’ Handicap Chase

  • Taking place for the first time since 2020, the chase is over 2m4½f and has no ratings cap.
  • The removal of the cap, which had been up to 145, looks to have had an effect, with around a third of the field rated at least 146.
  • Nine of the last 10 winners have been 12/1 or shorter, with the last 10 winners 11-2 or longer. Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s second-favourite, Nurburgring, is the shortest runner within those odds.
  • Jagwar could become the fifth out of 17 winners to have been favourites. Thirteen have been in the first six in the betting.
  • Five of the winners ran at the previous edition of Cheltenham, including three in a novice hurdle contest.

14:40: Pertemps Network Final

  • Elliott has won three of the last seven editions, so look out for Patter Merchant and Lucky Lyreen.
  • Since Presenting Percy in 2017, none of the seven winners have won in the previous eight months.
  • Two of the three jockeys with a record three wins have been recent competitors: Davy Russell between 2016 and 2018 and Barry Geraghty in 2003, 2019 and 2020.
  • All but one of the last 12 winners have been aged between six and eight, so nine-year-olds such as Harbour Lake, Super Survivor and Doddiethegreat would be bucking a trend.
  • Henderson’s Jeriko Du Reponet could become only the third favourite in 20 years to win.

15:20: Ryanair Chase

  • Second-favourite Il Est Francais could become first winner never to have run at Cheltenham.
  • Mullins has trained five of the last nine winners, and his contingent this time include favourite Fact To File and fourth-favourite Gaelic Warrior.
  • Ten of the last 12 winners have been in the top three in the betting. Skelton’s Protektorat is third-favourite.
  • Henderson trained 2012 winner Riverside Theatre but has failed with his last 11 runners.
  • Six-year-olds tend to steer clear of the chase, with Taranis in 2007 the only winner at that age.

16:00: Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle

  • The Stayers’ Hurdle was always held on a Tuesday or Wednesday from 1972, then switched to Thursday from 1993.
  • Strong favourite Teahupoo could become the eighth multiple winner and the first since Flooring Porter in 2021 and 2022.
  • Ten-year-old second-favourite Home by the Lee is among the horses aiming to change a trend of 31 of of the last 35 winners being aged between six and eight.
  • Nine-year-old Gowel Road is the only horse among the top six in the betting with a rating under 151.
  • Rockys Diamond could become the first five-year-old Stayers’ Hurdle winner since the race was introduced at Cheltenham.

16:40: TrustATrader Plate

  • The last three plate winners have all been at least 10, offering encouragement for the likes of Fugitif, Seddon and Shakem Up’arry
  • Eighteen of the last 24 winners were double-figure odds.
  • Trainer Venetia Williams has won the race three times with horses priced 12-1, 33-1 and 50-1, and her entries this year offer similarly handsome rewards: Gemirande, Galop De Chasse and Demnat.
  • The last 12 winners were rated between 140-149. None of the widely available top four in the betting match that description, but Masaccio and Jordans are among those who do.
  • Record-winning jockey Fred Winter was in the midst of his run of three wins 70 years ago, triumphing on Slender (1951, dead-heat), Sy Oui (1953) and Caesar’s Helm (1958).

17:20: Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup

  • Williams’ Frero Banbou and Henderson’s Fantastic Lady are among the runners aiming to become the fifth winners aged over nine since 1992.
  • Six of the last 12 winners have been in the top three in the betting.
  • Paul Nicholls, who has outsider Gelino Bello, has placed two horses from his last 24 starters in the cup.
  • 2024 winner Inothewayurthinkin was a fifth in the last six years for Irish trainers, with Angels Dawn leading an Irish top seven the previous year.
  • The most successful trainer in the race, Fred Rimell, enjoyed his four wins across 26 years between 1951 and 1977.

Cheltenham Festival races: Friday, March 14

13:20: JCB Triumph Hurdle

  • Nine of the last 12 Triumph Hurdle winners ran in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown in February, as did the likes of third-favourite Hello Neighbour – the winner – this time.
  • Fourteen of the last 17 winners started 13/2 or shorter in the betting.
  • No winner in the last 16 races has been rated 138 or lower. Hello Neighbour and second-favourite Lulamba are 144, while favourite East India Dock is 155.
  • Henderson, whose runners include Lulamba and Palladium, has seven wins, including the top three in 2015.
  • Barry Geraghty is the top jockey, with five wins between 2003 and 2016, while Paul Townend was responsible for three between 2020 and 2023.

14:00: William Hill County Handicap Hurdle

  • Nine of the last 10 winners were trained by Mullins (5) or Skelton (4).
  • Mullins has three of the favourites in Kopeck De Mee, Absurde and Kargese, while Skelton has the single-figures Valgrand.
  • Fifteen of the last 19 winners, however, were priced in double figures.
  • James Owen’s Burdett Road and Mullins’ Daddy Long Legs could become only the third winners since 2000 with a rating in the 150s.
  • No horse has won the County Hurdle twice since 1946.

14:40: Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase

  • Introduced in 2021, the Mares’ Chase replaced the Listed Novices’ Handicap Chase, which was traditionally run on the opening day.
  • Sixteen of the last 30 mares-only races at Cheltenham have been won by French-breds, which could bode well for strong favourite, Dinoblue, who was last year’s runner-up.
  • Allegorie De Vassy, who was second in 2023, could extend the record of all four winners of the race being second-favourites.
  • Both of those are Mullins horses, and he trained the first two winners: Colreevy and Elimay.
  • All four winners have been seven or eight, making Williams’ 10-year-old, Fontaine Collonges, look even more of a long shot.

15:20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

  • 2024 Novices’ Hurdle winner Stellar Story was the 10th of the past 11 winners at double-figure odds.
  • The race was originally open to horses aged over four, but the youngest winners have been two five-year-olds, with four-year-olds excluded since 2023.
  • Owners Gigginstown have won the race on three occasions.
  • The field is dominated by six and seven-year-olds, who have contributed 17 of the last 19 winners.
  • After having almost no success in the race, Elliott’s runners include one of the favourites, Wingmen, while Henderson is depending on Nativehill to break his duck.

16:00: Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup

  • The first edition of the Gold Cup, in July 1819, was a flat race over three miles on Cleeve Hill, overlooking the current racecourse.
  • Desert Orchid won under Simon Sherwood in 1989, followed by 100-1 outsider Norton’s Coin the following year.
  • Golden Miller won five in a row between 1932 and 1936.
  • Galopin Des Champs will join Cottage Rake, Arkle and Best Mate as a triple winner if the hot favourite wins.
  • Only four of the last 24 winners did not start in the top three in the betting.

16:40: St. James’s Place Festival Hunters’ Chase

  • Seven of the last 15 winners of the Hunters’ Chase have finished in the first five in a previous year’s renewal. Third-favourite Its On The Line has been runner-up in the last two editions.
  • The Champion Hunters’ Chase at Punchestown Festival, which was won by Its On The Line, has provided eight of the last 18 winners.
  • The likes of Ontheropes are aiming to become only the fifth winner in the last 35 races to be aged over 10.
  • No runner is under seven, with only one six-year-old winner in the last 37 runnings.
  • Angels Dawn, What a Glance, Bardenstown Lad and Take All are bidding to become the seventh 10-year-old winners in 11 chases.

17:30: Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

  • Nine of the last 14 winners of the hurdle have been Irish-trained, with Mullins’ Kopeck De Mee and Elliott’s Wodhooh the favourites this time.
  • The last 13 winners were all rated at least 137 heading into the contest, but Wodhooh is the only runner in the top four in the betting with that status.
  • Gigginstown have owned four winners and had six other placed finishers.
  • Henderson’s No Ordinary Joe – a nine-year-old – is considered the strongest hope to end a perfect run for horses aged under eight in the 16 editions.
  • Kopeck De Mee could become only the second favourite to win the hurdle.
