Auxerre vs PSG predictions

Last Saturday, Paris Saint-Germain moved seven points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Yet the home crowd at the Parc des Princes booed the team off after a 1-1 draw with Nantes.

That was a disappointing result for PSG. They dominated the ball to a remarkable extent, finishing the match with 85% possession. Luis Enrique’s side also outshot their opponents 24-5, but familiar failings in the final third allowed Nantes to escape with a point.

Still, it was a rare domestic stumble for PSG, who remain in a commanding position in the title race. But because they are so financially dominant at home, winning Ligue 1 is no longer enough to satisfy the club’s fan base.

Indeed, much of the discontent on the terraces is due to PSG’s disappointing displays in the Champions League. There is still time for Luis Enrique’s men to turn things around in Europe, but things are not looking good after five rounds of fixtures in the league phase.

As things stand, PSG are a lowly 25th in the 36-team standings. If they were to remain there, they would not even make it through to the knockout phase play-offs; PSG would be out of Europe by the end of January.

Next week’s meeting with Red Bull Salzburg is a must-win encounter for the Parisians, who are then due to host Manchester City and travel to Stuttgart next month.

Luis Enrique will no doubt have half an eye on the upcoming clash with Salzburg, but that cannot be used as an excuse if PSG slip up against Auxerre.

The manager is starting to come under a little pressure in the French capital. Crashing out of the Champions League early would not reflect well on Luis Enrique, regardless of how well things are going in Ligue 1.

PSG should not count their chickens domestically either. A seven-point lead is certainly healthy at this stage of the season, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that at least one of Marseille or Monaco will close that gap over the next weeks.

Needless to say, anything less than a PSG win on Friday would provide the chasing pack with a degree of encouragement.

For all the understandable frustration around PSG right now, it is hard to argue they are doing badly in Ligue 1. 

With 10 mins and three draws to their name, the Parisians remain unbeaten. It is true that their performances in Europe have left a lot to be desired, but the underlying numbers show that PSG have been by far the best team in France so far.

They will not have everything their own way here, though. Auxerre are eighth in the table and have won four in a row at home.

PSG might actually find it easier to play away from home. The Parc des Princes crowd has a tendency to get on the team’s back when things are not going well.

That will not be an issue here. PSG should emerge victorious, but a clean sheet is likely to be beyond them.

With that huge game against Red Bull Salzburg on the horizon, Luis Enrique would love for his side to be 3-0 up after an hour of Friday’s contest.

That would allow the PSG boss to make some changes in the second half in a bid to keep key men fresh for the trip to Austria.

PSG will also be looking to make a fast start to dispel some of the negativity around the side.

But Auxerre will be buoyed by their own recent results at home, so we should not expect them to simply sit back and hope for the best from the first whistle.

This promises to be an enjoyable encounter and we reckon there will be at least two goals before the break.

Goncalo Ramos to score any time

Luis Enrique has often used a false nine this season, but he went with Goncalo Ramos as a more orthodox central striker last time out.

Ramos was ineffectual in that 1-1 draw with Nantes, but he has only just returned from injury and it may take a few more matches before he is at his sharpest.

Ramos is likely to be given another chance to show what he can do when PSG head to Auxerre this weekend.

Whether or not the Portugal international is good enough to lead the line for a team aiming to win the Champions League remains to be seen, but he has enough about him to shine in Ligue 1.

Other PSG attackers are more eye-catching, but most of the team’s chances will fall to Ramos.
