AC Milan vs Red Star Belgrade predictions
AC Milan have turned their Champions League campaign around. After back-to-back defeats by Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, the Rossoneri left themselves with little margin for error heading into matchday three.
Since then they have taken nine points from the nine available. A 3-1 home victory over Club Brugge was followed by a magnificent win by the same scoreline against Real Madrid. Milan showed no fear at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and got their just rewards.
A battling 3-2 defeat of Slovan Bratislava last time out lifted Milan up to 16th in the standings. They are well positioned to qualify for the knockout phase play-offs, although a top-eight finish is not yet out of the question.
If Milan were to take maximum points from the last nine on offer, they would probably qualify directly for the round of 16. The schedule does not look overly daunting: after this clash with Red Star Belgrade, Milan will face Girona at home and Dinamo Zagreb away.
Paulo Fonseca’s side warmed up for this game with a 2-1 loss to high-flying Atalanta at the weekend. It was Milan’s first defeat in eight matches in all competitions.
Fonseca got off to a poor start at San Siro, but his side have been pretty good since the first few weeks of the campaign. The expected goals data in Serie A suggests they have been the fourth-best overall performers behind Atalanta, Lazio and Napoli.
The problem is, Milan are seventh in the actual standings and are probably out of the title race already. That could lead Fonseca and co. to dedicate much of their attention to the Champions League, a tournament this club has won seven times before but has made little impact on over the last few years.
Red Star Belgrade are battling to avoid an early elimination, but they have their work cut out after amassing only three points so far. This is their second visit to San Siro in 2024/25, having previously lost 4-0 to Inter.
Milan are aiming to follow in the footsteps of their rivals on Wednesday as they aim to take a step closer to the knockout phase of the Champions League.

That set of results shows that there tends to be plenty of goals when Red Star are in action, and Wednesday’s encounter will probably follow that pattern.

For all that they have been outclassed in several matches this term, Red Star have found the back of the net in four of their five matches.
Meanwhile four of Milan’s continental contests have featured goals at both ends, making that a solid selection here.
In terms of the winner, it is hard to look past Fonseca’s side given their superior quality across the pitch.

Red Star Belgrade have had huge difficulties in keeping the back door shut this campaign.
Their backline has been breached on 17 occasions in the Champions League. Only Slovan Bratislava have given up more goals so far.
Red Star have been much more defensively secure domestically, conceding just nine goals in their first 17 games in the 2024/25 Serbian SuperLiga season.
The Champions League is a massive step up, though, and the evidence so far suggests Red Star will find it difficult to keep Milan’s frontline quiet on Wednesday.

Tijjani Reijnders is playing some of the best football of his career under Fonseca.
Having previously been used in a deeper midfield role, Reijnders has been deployed further forward at club level this term.
Even when he is fielded as an orthodox central midfielder, the Netherlands international is encouraged to push on and make runs into the box.
No Milan player has scored more goals in the Champions League than Reijnders, who has beaten opposition goalkeepers on three occasions.
The Dutchman has the quality to take advantage of Red Star Belgrade’s defensive deficiencies when these two teams go at it at San Siro.
