Brock Purdy predicted to eclipse Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence’s $275million contracts and become NFL’s second-highest paid QB

Brock Purdy is about to get paid.

The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft will enter the last year of his rookie deal in 2025, and the San Francisco 49ers want to tie him down to a long-term contract during the offseason.

Opinions differ on where any new contract will land, with many suggesting the 49ers star is deserving of a deal that at least matches the likes of Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow and Jordan Love.

Those three quarterbacks were all paid $55million in 2024, with only Dallas Cowboys signal caller Dak Prescott making more last season ($60m).

Purdy has led San Francisco to two NFC championships and one Super Bowl appearance in his three seasons to date, before missing out on the playoffs in 2024.

The likes of Lawrence and Love have not had that level of success, and it is perhaps only fair for Purdy to be paid at least as much as them.

However, the Niners have leverage, with the ability to franchise tag their QB in 2026 and 2027.

In 2025, Purdy is set to earn a base salary of just over $5.2m – which might make him more eager to get a deal done in the offseason.

While negotiations between the two parties are likely to stretch across the offseason, one NFL insider believes Purdy could be in line for a massive payday when all is said and done.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported earlier this month that if the 25-year-old wants to ‘push it and stand on his record relative to his peers’, it would not be a shock if his eventual extension ends up averaging more than $55m.

That, of course, would see him eclipse the likes of Lawrence and Burrow, who both signed five-year, $275m deals.

It would also see him paid more than three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes.

And with suggestions that Purdy could command a salary that exceeds $50m from next season, another respected NFL journalist has urged the 49ers to follow a contract philosophy similar to that of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Very few NFL contracts exceed five years, but ahead of his fourth professional season in 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year extension worth up to $450 million,” David Lombardi wrote for the San Francisco Standard on February 18.

“The deal remains notably favorable to the Chiefs because they have contractual control over Mahomes for a decade — with additional guarantees at this portion of the contract kicking in on an annual basis.

“This effectively gives Kansas City an eject button should the team ever need it at no material cost. Mahomes’ deal is the embodiment of team friendliness.

“The 49ers should operate with that as a goal when it comes to Purdy’s new contract. The philosophy is simple: The longer the range of team control, the better — as long as that control doesn’t come at the cost of fully guaranteed money beyond the third season of the contract.

“That’s actually happened only once in league history, when the Cleveland Browns awarded $230m fully guaranteed over five years to quarterback Deshaun Watson. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that’s quickly become the worst contract in NFL history.”

Following that philosophy could certainly be an option for the 49ers, especially as general manager John Lynch has already made it clear that the franchise wants to keep Purdy around for a long time.

“What we know about Brock is he’s our guy,” Lynch said last month.

“We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He’s done so much for our organization.

“He’s won big games and had a little tougher task as we all did this year with some of the things that happened this year.

“We just could never string games where we’re all together. Through that he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level.

“So we have every interest in him being around.”

Only time will tell how Purdy’s contract situation will unfold across the offseason, but all signs point to him getting paid handsomely.
