Borussia Dortmund vs Sporting CP predictions

Last season, Borussia Dortmund slumped to a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga  while also reaching the Champions League final. Once again, they have been more impressive on the continent than domestically in 2024/25.

Dortmund stormed to a 3-0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of this Champions League play-off. 

Sporting have not been the same since Ruben Amorim jumped ship to Manchester United in November, but that was still a mightily impressive result away from home. Dortmund have one foot in the round of 16 already.

A few days after that success in Portugal, BVB slumped to a 2-0 defeat by Bochum in the Bundesliga. 

Fifth place was a disappointing outcome last term, but Dortmund would bite your hand off to finish that high this year. Their latest loss on Saturday left them in the bottom half of the standings, closer to the relegation spots than the top two.

Niko Kovac, appointed at the start of the month, has yet to arrest BVB’s domestic decline. Yet it was he who oversaw that eye-catching triumph over Sporting last month. Kovac has thus picked up from where Nuri Sahin left off.

The former Dortmund midfielder served as Edin Terzic’s assistant before being promoted to the role of head coach last summer. 

Up until his dismissal in January, Sahin was unable to get consistent results in the Bundesliga. Even so, Dortmund were pretty good in the league phase of the Champions League, finishing 10th and scoring more goals than anyone but Barcelona.

Perhaps the time has come to double down and put their remaining eggs in the European basket. Dortmund are now eight points behind RB Leipzig in fourth place. Their chances of qualifying for next season’s edition of the Champions League are growing slimmer by the week. 

Assuming they avoid a monumental collapse on Wednesday, Dortmund will face either Aston Villa or Lille in the round of 16. Neither team should be taken lightly, but the draw could certainly have been unkinder.

First, though, Kovac’s team must complete the job at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund are one of the most unpredictable and unreliable sides in Europe, but even they could not throw away this position of strength… could they?

Amorim might be struggling to turn Manchester United’s fortunes around, but he built a fantastic team at Sporting CP. 

His successors have not been able to maintain the levels Amorim set. Joao Pereira, his immediate replacement, did not last long. 

Rui Borges has steadied the ship domestically, but Sporting have not won any of the three Champions League games he has taken charge of.

That is one reason why it is very difficult to see Sporting turning this tie around. Another is that Dortmund, for all their faults, are generally pretty good at home. Finally, it would be difficult to wipe out a 3-0 deficit even if Sporting were a much stronger side than they are.

In terms of the 90 minutes on Wednesday, Dortmund are the likeliest winners. They could do with another convincing victory after the Bochum defeat, while Sporting may not have sufficient motivation given the aggregate score at the midway point.

If Sporting CP are to have any chance of going through to the last 16, they need to score the first goal.

Given Borussia Dortmund’s difficulties this term, the Signal Iduna Park crowd could get nervous if their team falls behind on the night.

Yet it is hard to see Sporting keeping the clean sheet that is surely necessary if they are to pull off what would be a miraculous comeback.

Equally, we do not envisage Dortmund registering a shut-out. They could take their eye off the ball if they extend their aggregate lead, or they could succumb to Sporting’s early pressure.

Either way, this is unlikely to be a drab 0-0.

Serhou Guirassy to score any time

Serhou Guirassy embodies Borussia Dortmund’s season.

In 18 Bundesliga appearances, the Guinea international has scored nine goals. In nine outings in the Champions League, he has made the net bulge 10 times.

Only the evergreen Robert Lewandowski, a player Borussia Dortmund know well, scored as many goals as Guirassy in the league phase, and the BVB frontman has now overtaken the Barcelona striker overall.

If they are still 3-0 down or worse at half-time on Wednesday, Sporting CP may opt to rest some of their key men ahead of this weekend’s trip to AVS.

Against either a first-choice or weakened oppositon backline, Guirassy can make his mark.
