Everton vs Manchester United predictions

How low can Manchester United go?

Mediocrity at Old Trafford set in long ago, yet even in the post-Alex Ferguson era United have never finished lower than eighth in the Premier League. Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Everton, they sit 15th in the standings.

Their latest setback was a 1-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Spurs are also enduring a difficult campaign, but they were worthy winners in north London. United did not do enough to breach one of the leakiest backlines in the division.

Clearly, the problems at United run deep. The jury is out on Jim Ratcliffe, who now controls football operations at the club.

Recruitment has been poor for a number of years. United have splashed plenty of cash, but much of it has been wasted.

It is remarkable to think that, after hundreds of millions of pounds worth of expenditure in the last five years alone, United have ended up with a squad as average as this one.

At the same time, questions must be asked of Ruben Amorim. United have got worse on his watch. His 3-4-2-1 system is not working, but Amorim has painted himself into a corner by continually insisting he will not deviate from his preferred formation.

“What you see guys and what you discuss every week, I also see,” he said after the loss to Tottenham. “I have a lot of problems, my job is so, so hard here. But I stick with my beliefs.”

Amorim was initially reluctant to take over in the middle of the season, but United insisted that theirs was a now-or-never offer. In hindsight, the Portuguese must wish he had stuck to his guns.

United will surely improve once the squad has been strengthened with players suited to Amorim’s system, and once the manager has had a full pre-season to work on the team’s structure. But by overseeing such a dismal set of results in 2024/25, Amorim has been tainted.

A 12-point buffer above the bottom three means United will not be relegated, but a top-half finish increasingly looks like it will be out of reach.

As if things were not bad enough, the Red Devils have suddenly been hit with an injury crisis. It never rains but it pours.

Everton vs Man Utd betting tips

Everton host Manchester United in a clash between two bottom-half teams in the Premier League.

Everton to win

Everton look like a team reborn under David Moyes. Although he only returned to the club on January 11, Moyes has already overseen as many Premier League wins in his current job as Amorim has at United.

Their latest success saw Everton beat Crystal Palace 2-1. It was a scrappy victory and the Toffees rode their luck at times, but there is no doubt that Moyes has made them a more effective team.

The absence of Iliman Ndiaye is a blow given the spark he provides in the final third, but Everton will still fancy their chances of coming out on top here.

United’s confidence is on the floor and they have numerous first-team absentees, including key players like Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo.

United are 15th in the table and they do not deserve to be any higher. Expect another defeat against an in-form Everton side.

Under 2.5 goals

A front three of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee is not one to strike fear into the hearts of opposition defences.

Garnacho has the highest ceiling of that trio, but he is going through a difficult spell at present. Hojlund is also struggling and although Zirkzee looked sharp against Spurs, Manchester United have drawn 10 blanks in 25 league matches this term.

With Ndiaye, Dwight McNeil, Armando Broja and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all on the treatment table, Everton are also down to the bare bones in attack.

As such, Moyes may look to lean on the team’s defence against United in the belief that keeping things tight at the back is the best route to victory.

Saturday’s early kick-off is unlikely to be a goal-laden affair.

Beto to score any time

Beto did not get many opportunities under Sean Dyche, but he has been impressive since Moyes returned to Goodison Park.

Calvert-Lewin and Broja’s injuries have given the Guinea-Bissau international a chance to shine and Beto has responded with four goals in his last three appearances.

The 27-year-old is not the most polished centre-forward in the country, but no one can question his desire and work ethic.

Beto is a popular figure with the Everton fan base and he has the attributes to cause Manchester United problems this weekend.
