The cricket world often thrives on redemption arcs, and Dewald Brevis at the age of 21 already would have a fair idea about. The SA20 2024-25 season could prove to be a huge turning point in his young career. Brevis amassed 291 runs in 12 matches at an impressive average of 48.50, with a strike rate of 184.17—the highest in the competition.

“I just had a few things, important people that played a role in my journey this year and throughout my life. I’m just happy to enjoy the game and play with a smile,” Brevis told CricketNext.com in an exclusive conversation after MI Cape Town’s title win at the Wanderers Stadium on Saturday.

Brevis reflected on the journey that led to this success. “It feels special and an honour to play an important role in the team’s success,” he said. “I’ve had important people supporting me throughout my journey, and I’m just happy to enjoy the game and play with a smile.”

Brevis’ story is a fascinating one. After catching the cricketing world’s attention at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies in 2022, where he scored a remarkable 506 runs in just six matches, including two centuries and three half-centuries, Brevis was quickly snapped up by Mumbai Indians. Comparisons with AB de Villiers followed, as Brevis mimicked the power and versatility that made De Villiers a legend.

However, the transition to senior cricket has not been seamless. In his debut IPL season in 2022, Brevis managed 161 runs in seven matches. The following year, he did not play a single game, and in 2024, he featured in only three matches for Mumbai. His brief international stint for the Proteas against Australia yielded just five runs in two matches.

Domestically too, Brevis struggled with consistency. Despite flashes of brilliance, such as a highest T20 score of 162 against the Knights and a recent first-class 159 against the Dolphins, his performances remained sporadic. Bowlers began to exploit his weaknesses, particularly with the short ball.

And at the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in November last year, Brevis remained unsold. However, Playing for MI Cape Town in SA20 2024-25, Brevis was instrumental in the team’s championship-winning campaign, finishing as the sixth-highest run-scorer in the competition. His aggressive knock of 38 off just 18 balls in the final showcased his fearless batting.

Acknowledging the challenges, Brevis shared how he adjusted his mindset. “I don’t see my role as high risk, low reward. I see it as being fearless but not reckless and finding a way to be consistent in whatever situation you are and doing it for the team. When I go out there, I want to be 100% through to give my best,” he explained.

Special Bond With MI Franchise

Brevis credited the MI Cape Town setup for fostering a winning culture. “There’s a special bond and a lot of history. Everyone wants to beat us, but we play with great honour. It’s the blue and gold,” he said, describing the pride he felt representing the franchise.

Despite his IPL disappointment, Brevis used it as motivation to excel in SA20. “It was obviously a bit sad not being picked this year, but it motivates me. I know where I’m going to be in the future, so I just need to focus on the now, take it ball by ball, enjoy it, and play with a smile. Everything will work out as it should,” he said with optimism.

Looking ahead, Brevis is determined to sharpen his skills, particularly in the longer format. “When domestic cricket comes, it’s something new, and you must always be true to yourself. You have to stay in the now. You can’t think it’s been good; you have to stay in the now and take it as it comes,” he advised.
