England fast bowler Gus Atkinson joined legendary Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah in an elite list on Saturday (December 7). The 26-year-old Atkinson, who made his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2024 at Lord’s, picked up a hat trick in the ongoing second Test against New Zealand. The right-arm medium pacer dismissed Nathan Smith (14), Matt Henry (0), and Tim Southee (0) in back-to-back deliveries to complete a memorable hat-trick. While Smith was clean bowled by Atkinson, Ben Duckett completed Henry’s catch, and Southee was trapped in front of the wickets by the English seamer, who now has 47 wickets to his name in 18 innings of 10 Tests played so far.
By taking his first-ever hat trick in international cricket, Atkinson joined Bumrah in an elite list. The English seamer became the fourth bowler in World Test Championship history to take a hat trick. Bumrah was the first bowler to dismiss three batters in three balls. He achieved the feat during the 2019 India-West Indies Test, which was played in Kingston from August 30 to September 2.
In that match, Bumrah dismissed Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, and Roston Chase on the second, third, and fourth balls of the ninth over of West Indies’ first innings.
Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah also has a hat trick to his name in WTC. The 21-year-old fast bowler accounted for the dismissals of Najmul Hossain Shanto, Taijul Islam, and Mahmudullah in three consecutive balls during the Pakistan-Bangladesh Test match played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from February 7 to 10 in 2020.
Keshav Maharaj dismissed three West Indies batters during the WTC match for South Africa in Gros Islet from June 18 to 21 in 2021.

Atkinson finished with figures of 4 for 31 in 8.5 overs in the first innings, and the four prized wickets also helped him move to the No. 2 position in the list of bowlers with the most Test wickets in 2024. Bumrah, who sits at No. 1 position in the ICC Test bowler’s rankings, tops the wicket-takers list in 2024. In 11 Tests played so far, the 31-year-old Indian star has 50 wickets to his name. He picked up his 50th Test wicket in 2024 on Friday (December 6) by dismissing Australian opening batter Usman Khawaja.
Khawaja came out to open for the Baggy Greens in the ongoing Day-Night Test between India and Australia at Adelaide Oval but failed to score big runs and was caught by Rohit Sharma in slips after making 13 runs from 35 balls.
