Keyshawn Davis is eyeing a fight with Gervonta Davis after his Valentine’s Day showdown with Denys Berinchyk.
‘The Businessman’ cemented his position as mandatory for WBO champion Berinchyk in his last outing with a statement-making second-round knockout win over Gustavo Daniel Lamos.
When he took to the mic post-fight Berinchyk was, naturally, the first name on his lips but he wasn’t the only one.
“Hey Gevonta – knock, knock,” he shouted.
It is a fight that has been marinating for some time.
The lightweight titans have continually traded barbs on social media and there seems to be a genuine dislike between them.
Keyshawn’s trainer Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre has done an excellent job of selling the fight and is incredibly confident that his client is the man to finally topple the WBA lightweight champion.
‘Bomac’ believes Gervonta is a match made in heaven for Keyshawn and anticipates that the 25-year-old puncher will inflict the same beating on ‘Tank’ that his star pupil Terence Crawford dished out on Errol Spence in July 2023 for the undisputed welterweight crown.
It is a comparison that Keyshawn concurs with wholeheartedly.
“Exactly, how he said it. I see myself putting the same beating on Gervonta as Terence did,” he told talkSPORT.com when reminded of ‘Bomac’s prediction.
“I feel like his style is perfect for my style. I’m young, I don’t think it will go the full 12 but I can fight 12 rounds if it comes down to it.
“I’m smarter than him inside and outside of the ring. I’m just smarter than him period.
“The only thing we are always going to mention is that one punch.
“I have power and I’ve knocked fighters out with one punch but he has done it consecutive times.
“We know he has got that one punch but we don’t know yet what I truly have because I only have 12 fights and I’ve only been fighting on a truly elite level for three fights, this fight will be my fourth [against Berinchyk].
“So there is a lot of factors that you don’t know yet. I am better than I am showing you guys already.”
Keyshawn sparred Gervonta twice during his amateur days, which only served to further boost his confidence.
“I wasn’t thinking about fighting him when I was sparring him,” Keyshawn added.
“The first time I sparred him I was 16 and the second time I was 21, I was about to go to the Olympics.
“I just thought ‘Ok I just competed with one of the best pros and I have the talent to go pro and be dominant’.
“They were competitive spars, I’ve always been good even as an amateur.
“People have always been like ‘Damn, you’ve got to spar Keyshawn?’
“I didn’t just turn pro and everybody knew me. I was like that before I got on the Olympic team. I always had talent, I could always fight.”
Before Keyshawn can land a unification clash with Gervonta he will have to get through Berinchyk on Friday night.
The Ukrainian slickster won the WBO title by beating long-reigning super featherweight king Emanuel Navarrete in May and picked up an Olympic silver medal eight years before Keyshawn did the same in Tokyo.
On paper, he is by far Keyshawn’s toughest test to date.
However, it is one the fast-rising American expects to pass with flying colours.
“I am expecting somebody who is going to give their all,” he continued.
“When he loses this fight and how he loses this fight he knows it is going to be over with for him.
“Just because of his age (36 years old) and how badly I am going to do him.
“He is going to come out and do everything he can do to make sure it isn’t that bad.
“He’s coming out there to fight and make it as tough as possible for me but it is not going to work for him.”
