Manchester City head into tonight’s Champions League knockout phase play-ff having got back to winning ways last weekend as they survived an FA Cup scare by coming from behind to beat League One side Leyton Orient to book their place in the last 16.
Pep Guardiola’s side will look to put one foot in the same stage of the Champions League tonight with a dominant first leg performance at home against the defending champions, but the game comes just nine days after their 5-1 hammering by Arsenal in their most recent Premier League game.
The defeat at the Emirates saw the Citizens drop back out of the top four in the table, the four-time defending Premier League champions way off the pace needed to be considered for an unprecedented fifth league title in succession, now 15 points off the top having played a game more.
The Citizens have struggled away from home for what feels like the majority of the season now, but have won their last four matches at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions, losing only one of their last eight.
The European treble winners of 2023 finished all the way down in 22nd in the inaugural Champions League league phase this season, falling well short of the top eight finish that would have seen them progress directly into the last 16 without any need for a play-off, winning just three of their eight league phase games.
Real Madrid make the trip to Manchester having lost just one of their last eight matches in all competitions, though their run of six victories in their last seven games did come to an end on the weekend as they were held 1-1 by Atletico Madrid in the derby.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side still sit right at the top of the La Liga table though as they look for their second league title in a row, currently one point clear of their local rivals whom they faced on Saturday night.
Los Blancos the Champions League reigning champions after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley last June, also struggled to get going in this season’s competition, losing three of their eight group games which could only see them finish in 11th place.
The two giants of European football have met in the Champions League in four of the last five season, with the victorious side in each of the last three seasons between the two teams eventually progressing to lift the trophy.
Real Madrid progressed on penalties last season at the quarter final stage, leaving City with just one win in their last five games against the Spanish side, however, Madrid have never won a game in 90 minutes at the Etihad and have lost on three of their last four visits.
