Monday racing tips
- CARLISLE
2.20: Saint Malinas 11/8 (2pts)
2.50: Swinger – Fortunate Man & Tanganyika (1pt)
3.20: Pigeon House 3/1 (1pt) - WOLVERHAMPTON
4.25: Eagle Day 11/2 each-way (1pt)
Saint Malinas
Joecooker beat Saint Malinas in December and this gelding is now favourite for this maiden hurdle having gone respectably on hurdle debut.
He appeals more considering that winner went on to enter into Grade 2 company and though was 5th of 6, wasn’t disgraced on first start over 3m.
Malicash could be the danger at 2/1 but given his inconsistency he will need to really bounce back to threaten Saint Malinas who is dangerously unexposed and should improve on his second start over hurdles.
Swinger: Fortunate Man & Tanganyika
The Wolf is a very likeable horse and has placed well to earn him a few fans along his career that’s largely been unpredictable.
He’s raced over fences 27 times with only four wins, but two of those have come in that last two races despite now being 11-years-old.
He seems to have re-gained his desire to win at this age which is great to see having had an up and down season in 2023/24.
Those two wins came in November only separated by six days and has been upped 11lb in that time.
He faces a tougher task here though, a slightly bigger field while also going up against some closer rated rivals who are fancied to win as they come into this in good form at just six and seven-years-old.
Fortunate Man has been ultra consistent over 3m+ this season and has clearly got the hang of chasing well.
His record is 212 when going over 3m chasing and he hasn’t been bumped up much in the weights to give him a great chance.
He showed his stamina even more when second to Planned Paradise at Windsor over 3m4f.
I do think Tanganyika is still well-weighted and the more chances he gets over fences to prove himself the more he can deliver – especially after that win at Market Rasen and not to mention a really encouraging chase debut behind Jagwar.
Pigeon House
Joltin N Jiving has similar form lines with Malicash, but I’d be opting for Pigeon House here are a better price given he’s back down 5lb and back to 2m after not suiting 3m last time out.
The five-year-old is by Saxon Warrior already raced over hurdles 19 times but is going well for trainer Jennie Candlish after making a debut for the yard in December.
With three second placed finished at a mark in the 130’s.
He does have to carry 12lb extra though and that’s where the appeal for Joltin N Jiving comes into the price – but could still be up against it.
Eagle Day
Finished ahead of King’s Code by a decent distance earlier this month and is still somehow 11/2 making him a great each-way chance.
Only beaten by Smart Hero over course and distance who has long hinted at being a strong horse once he got the hang of things.
That four-year-old won the month before too and was only upped 2lb so clearly, a second place finish behind him was encouraging.
