Next Swansea manager odds: Russell Martin and Steven Gerrard trail Buckingham for Swans hotseat

Former Southampton and Swansea manager Russell Martin is currently second favourite to return to the Swansea.com Stadium as manager after Luke Williams was given his marching orders on Monday afternoon.

Martin is priced at 6/1, the second shortest odds after the former Oxford boss Des Buckingham, who is priced as the 5/2 favourite, while Steven Gerrard is 16/1 to make a return to English football in south Wales. The full odds list can be found here.

Luke Williams had previously been appointed as Swansea manager in January last year, joining the club while they were 16th in the Championship, signing from Notts County after getting the Magpies promoted to League Two the previous season.

The 43-year-old, who was previously assistant manager at Swansea under Russell Martin before his job in Nottingham, was sacked as manager on Monday afternoon though after 13 months in charge, after one win in 10 and seven defeats in eight, leaving them 17th in the table.

Des Buckingham is the current favourite to take over at the Swansea.com Stadium, and the 40-year-old has had unusual route to EFL management, spending eight years managing in New Zealand, Australia and India before being given the Oxford job in November 2023.

The Oxford-born coach got his hometown club promoted to the second division for the first time this century via the play-offs, but replaced by experienced Championship manager Gary Rowett in December with the club teetering just a point above the drop zone.

Russell Martin is being linked with a return to the club he spent two years managing at the start of the decade, where he got his first taste of Championship management.

The Scot spent two years with the Welsh side, achieving 15th and 10th placed positions before being signed by Southampton and achieving promotion with them to the Premier League in his first season in charge last year.

The 39-year-old has been unemployed since his sacking as Saints boss in December though, when the club were rock bottom of the Premier League table after picking up five points from his opening 16 matches.

Other names in the running for the Swans’ job include former Plymouth and Preston boss Ryan Lowe and former Luton and Watford manager Rob Edwards, both priced at 10/1.

Steven Gerrard is another name linked with a potential move to a return to English football after leaving his job in Saudi Arabia last month after spending 18 months in charge of Al-Ettifaq.

The England and Liverpool legend, who has previously managed Aston Villa and Rangers, has never managed at Championship level before but could see a second tier job as his pathway back into English managment.
