NFL betting tips: Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers preview and picks

Week 16 of the 2024 NFL season starts at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood as the Los Angeles Chargers host the Denver Broncos.

The two AFC West rivals will put it all on the line, with both teams still chasing a spot in the playoffs.

Denver have the upper hand thanks to their 9-5 record to lie second in the division, just one win ahead of the 8-6 Chargers.

Under 42.5 Total Points

Two elite defences have got both teams this far this season, with the two teams conceding 17.6 points per game.

Both the Chargers and Broncos, as well as the Eagles, concede under 18 points a game, which suggests Thursday’s meeting could be a low-scoring affair.

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix started the season in good form, but he has struggled in recent weeks. He threw three interceptions in Sunday’s 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts, making it five in two games.

While the Chargers conceded a whopping 40 points against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend, it was the first time they have conceded more than 30 all season and that should be a blip more than anything.

Los Angeles Chargers -2.5

The Broncos have done better than many experts expected them to, but their recent wins have all come against struggling teams.

Sean Payton’s team have won four in a row against the Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Colts, but all those beaten foes are out of form.

The Chargers were humiliated against the Buccaneers and Jim Harbaugh’s team should be motivated on home soil to put things right.

Denver’s offence is nowhere near as explosive as Tampa’s, so expect the Chargers to take control of this matchup.

Justin Herbert Under 235.5 Passing Yards

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has not got a wealth of options at his disposal on offence, and the Chargers’ front office will look to address that in the off-season.

Wide receiver Ladd McConkey has been Herbert’s main target, but the Broncos may not have to worry too much if they can shut him down.

The Chargers may, therefore, need to grind this game out on defence and on the ground, with Herbert having struggled recently.

Herbert has not thrown for more than 218 yards in any of his last four games and he will have to be careful and protect the ball against Denver’s elite defence.
