NFL betting tips: Detroit Lions vs Buffalo Bills preview and picks

The best game on the NFL Week 15 schedule is undoubtedly the mouthwatering clash between the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The game is a potential Super Bowl preview with the Lions the current favourites to win the title and the Bills second only to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC.

The Lions have an impressive 12-1 record and have not lost since a 20-16 home defeat by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.

They can’t think about easing up just yet, though, as the Minnesota Vikings are just one win behind them at 11-2 and they still have to face those rivals again in Week 18.

The Lions have won 11 games in a row but the Bills had their own seven-game winning streak snapped in a wild 44-42 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week.

Unlike Detroit, the Bills have already clinched their division – at 10-3 they are four wins ahead of the 6-7 Miami Dolphins in the AFC East – but every win counts as they still have a chance to catch the Kansas City Chiefs and gain the first seed for the AFC playoffs.

The teams don’t meet often as they play in different conferences but the Bills have won their last four meetings stretching back to 2010.

Their last clash in 2022 saw the Bills win an entertaining game 28-25 and the odds suggest another close and high-scoring game is likely at Ford Field.

We’ve prepared a four-leg bet builder suggestion for the match that pays out at 13/2 if successful.

Top offences set to do battle

The Lions and the Bills rank first and second respectively in points per game in the NFL this season, so a drab defensive encounter at Ford Field would be a huge disappointment for fans around the world.

Offences are expected to dominate with the Lions averaging a league-leading 32.1 points per game this season and the Bills not far behind at 30.5 after playing a full part in an 86-point game against the Rams last week.

The Lions were hardly in a defensive arm-wrestle themselves last week as they beat the Packers 34-31 for their fifth successive home win, and a fast-paced contest with at least 56 points expected in Michigan.

Shakhir set to shine

The Bills are hoping to have some offensive reinforcements for Sunday’s game with wide receiver Keon Coleman potentially returning to the field after missing the last month with a wrist injury, while tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) is expected to play after sitting out the last three games.

Wide receiver Khalil Shakhir has had a fantastic run in recent weeks, though, and quarterback Josh Allen is not likely to forget him even though he now has more options.

Shakhir raced for 106 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Rams last week and should be able to clear a line of barely more than half that this week. He has had 50 or more receiving yards in six of his last seven games.

Lions rely on Gibbs

The Lions have a fantastic running back pairing and the younger and faster half of it, Jahmyr Gibbs, will be confident of having another big game against the Bills.

Gibbs leads the team with 1,016 rushing yards at 78.2 per game and has added another 24 yards per game in receptions.

He had a quieter rushing game against the Packers last week, but he has reached triple figures in rushing and receiving yards in three of his last five games with 108 against the Texans, 123 against the Jaguars and 104 against the Bears, while he also had 99 against the Colts.

Asking him to reach 90 against the Bills seems reasonable.

Montgomery can reach end zone

David Montgomery averages 59.3 rushing yards per game for the Lions and has been a regular visitor to the end zone this season with 12 rushing touchdowns.

He has scored in 10 of Detroit’s 13 games this season and should add to his tally if this game lives up to expectations.
