Rohit Sharma will create history on Sunday (March 9) by becoming the first captain in the world to lead his team in all four ICC events. Under Rohit’s leadership, India played in the final of the 2023 World Test Championship, the 2023 ODI World Cup, and the 2024 T20 World Cup, and on Sunday, the Men in Blue will face New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025.
MS Dhoni led India to the finals of the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy but never got a chance to captain in the World Test Championship, whereas Kane Williamson was the captain of the New Zealand team that played in the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, 2021 WTC, and 2021 T20 World Cup.

During the final match between India and New Zealand at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Rohit will have a chance to equal MS Dhoni’s elite captaincy record and become only the second skipper in the world to win ICC titles in both ODI and T20I formats.
Dhoni was the captain of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013, whereas Rohit has already led India to the T20 World Cup title win in 2024 and on Sunday will have a chance to add the 50-over ICC title to his kitty.
So far, 17 captains—Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Allan Border, Imran Khan, Arjuna Ranatunga, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, MS Dhoni, Michael Clarke, Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins, Hansie Cronje, Stephen Fleming, Sourav Ganguly, Sanath Jayasuriya, Brian Lara, and Sarfaraz Ahmed—have an ICC ODI trophy, and eight captains—MS Dhoni, Younis Khan, Paul Collingwood, Daren Sammy, Lasith Malinga, Aaron Finch, Jos Buttler, and Rohit Sharma—have won an ICC T20 trophy, but only Dhoni is the only one with both the 50 over and 20 over ICC titles.
If India beat New Zealand in Dubai, then Rohit will also become the third captain after Clive Lloyd and Ricky Ponting to win two ICC titles without a 100% win record.

Lloyd led West Indies to ODI World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979, whereas Ponting was the captain of the Australian team that won all its matches in the 2003 and 2007 ODI World Cups.
Rohit, who became the third Indian captain to win the ICC trophy last year, won all eight matches as captain in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and in the 2025 Champions Trophy, India has won all four matches played so far.
Only five captains—Lloyd, Ponting, Dhoni, Daren Sammy and Pat Cummins —so far have won multiple ICC titles, and Rohit will have a chance to join the elite list on Sunday.
