Roma’s good form under the experienced Claudio Ranieri continued last week with a 4-0 win over Monza at the Stadio Olimpico.

The goals came from all over the pitch. Alexis Saelemaekers, Eldor Shomurodov, Angelino and Bryan Cristante all got their names on the scoresheet in the dominant win. 

The win was Roma’s third in succession in Serie A and extended their unbeaten league run to ten matches.

The Giallorossi are now up to ninth in the table. They have 40 points from 26 matches. 

Furthermore, Roma are now closing in on the top six and the European places, with Ranieri’s team starting the match week four points off sixth place Bologna and seven behind Lazio in fifth. 

As a result of their good form, there is now a real belief the Yellow and Reds can claim a place in Europe next season.

Ironically, the last team to beat Roma in Serie A was Como. I Biancoblù beat the Giallorossi 2-0 on Matchday 16, a win that saw them pull clear of the relegation places. 

Since dropping into the bottom three for the second time this season on Matchday 13, Cesc Fabregas’ team have picked up 18 points from their next 13 matches. 

The run of form has included five wins and three draws. This has resulted in the Spaniard’s team rising to 13th position and midtable safety.

Como can’t relax too much, though. They started the current match week on 28 points from 26 matches, only seven points clear of the relegation zone. 

The I Biancoblù were also given a recent reminder of how quickly fortunes can change when they went on a three-match losing skid. 

Successive defeats to Atalanta, Bologna and Juventus on Matchdays 22, 23 and 24 threatened to plunge Fabregas’ team back into the relegation dogfight. 

Showing what character Fabregas has instilled into this team, Como bounced back with a 2-0 win away at Fiorentina on Matchday 25 and they then defeated the then league leaders Napoli 2-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Sunday.

Assane Diao sealed the Matchday 26 victory with a 77th-minute winner.

Europe is probably going to be a big distraction for Claudio Ranieri and his team this weekend. The Giallorossi take on Athletic Club in the first leg of their Round of 16 Europa League tie on Thursday. 

This leaves Ranieri in an awkward predicament. He can leave players out with a view to having them ready for Thursday. But at the same time, he doesn’t want to undo all the good work he and his team have achieved recently in Serie A.

Como will be dangerous. They’ve just completed back-to-back wins over top-six opposition (Fiorentina were at the time) and won’t be afraid of facing Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. 

There are reasons to pick either team to win. But it’s Roma who are at home and have been stronger over a more consistent period.

Como has kept one clean sheet in their last eight in Serie A. They have also scored in eight of their previous nine.

Roma have scored in their last ten. Yes, the last time they failed to find the net in Serie A was when they lost 2-0 to Como.

Eldor Shomurodov to score anytime

Eldor Shomurodov has led the line to great effect for Roma in their last two matches. 

The Uzbek has benefitted from the fitness problems that Artem Dovbyk has been suffering from this season and is now pushing the previously undroppable Ukranian for his place in the starting eleven. 

Even if Dovbyk is available, Claudio Ranieri might decide to stick with Shomurodov, or he may even prefer to hold Dovbyk back for their Europa League clash with Athletic Club on Thursday.

Shomurodov is growing in stature. He rewarded Ranieri’s faith with a goal and an assist against Monza last week. If he plays, he is well worth backing to score again – especially at the odds of 11/5 on offer from Tote (he is 7/4 elsewhere).
