Saturday racing tips

  • NEWBURY
TIME: The New Lion & Regent’s Stroll – Combination Exacta (1.5pts)
  • LEOPARDSTOWN
    2.00: Home By The Lee 9/4 (1pt)
    2.35: Galopin Des Champs 11/8 (2pts)

Combination Exacta

These two, The New Lion and Regent’s Stroll, are incredibly promising hurdlers for two top yards trained by Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls, respectively.

While there’s some potential from some outsiders I can’t see anything other than these two battling it out at the front come the end.

One could be far better than the other but given how unexposed both are it’s wise to make this a combination exacta rather than choosing first and second in order.

Home By The Lee

We’re treated to more Grade 1 action at Leopardstown on Saturday too, with Home By The Lee the favourite for the Savills Hurdle, narrowly ahead of Bob Olinger.

Hewick is an interesting entry for new trainer Miss Tara Lee Cogan – ditching the fences for hurdles which was the case for this horse just earlier this year taking on the Liverpool Hurdle.

His top chase form doesn’t quite translate however, and could struggle to keep tabs on these as his jumping is usually what helps him eek out those long distances over others.

Bob Olinger was no match for Home By The Lee last time out at Navan over 2m4f and looks interesting up in trip, but not to back necessarily.

In fact the favourite holds most of the value too given he stepped up to win last time out having slightly disappointed on his three prior runs in 2024, but was never far off.

Two of those ended in getting third place in tough Grade 1 hurdles too including the Stayers at Cheltenham Festival, so he should relish going back up to this distance.

Especially as he’s won over course and distance before.

Galopin Des Champs

This is a proper match-up for the Christmas festival – Galopin Des Champs vs Fact To File in the Savills Chase.

A two-time Gold Cup winner taking on a horse that has that accolade set in his sights.

Fact To File beat Galopin Des Champs at Punchestown in the John Durkan, but back up to 3m, will he get the better of him this time?

His form ahead of Spillane’s Tower has only worked out okay given his performance in the King George VI Chase at Kempton.

But upped to 3m I think Galopin Des Champs still has a lot left in him.

He won this last year ahead of Gerri Colombe by 23 lengths and it will finally prove Fact To File’s ability, whether it be close or not.
