Stats: 10 Coaches Changed, Many Captains Sacked, But Pakistan’s ICC Poor Shows Continue

It’s hard to find something more mortifying than Pakistan exiting the first ICC tournament at their home since 1996 without winning a single match. A 60-run loss to New Zealand, a six-wicket defeat to India and a washed-out dead rubber against Bangladesh on Thursday wrote that for Pakistan in the 2025 Champions Trophy for the first time for any team in history of ICC competitions.

During the start of the tournament, there was a lot of talk about Pakistan being the defending champions. But there was a night-and-day difference between the side that won the Champions Trophy in 2017 and the overburdened, over-pressured, under-confident, and unstable one that took the field in 2025.

Apart from a semi-final appearance at the 2021 T20 World Cup and a runners-up run in 2022, Pakistan hardly found any success in ICC tournaments across formats. They saw two fifth-placed finishes in the ODI World Cups, a forgettable exit in 2024 (including a defeat to debutants USA) and an inability to even finish in the top-five, let alone come close to the finals of two World Test Championship (WTC) cycles.

In the same period, Pakistan’s cricket underwent shake-ups after shake-ups on and off the field. Mickey Arthur was the head coach that won the 2017 Champions Trophy but was sacked in 2019.

Arthur served for three years and no other coach, across formats, has matched him since. Those who have taken the job in this period are: Misbah-ul-Haq (2019-21), Saqlain Mushtaq (2021-23), Abdul Rehman (Interim, 2023), Grant Bradburn (2023), Mohammad Hafeez (2023-24), Azhar Mahmood (Interim, 2024, now an assistant coach), Jason Gillespie (Tests, 2024), Gary Kirsten (T20Is and ODIs, 2024).

However, despite the countless changes, Pakistan still couldn’t find a full-time coach before the 2025 Champions Trophy. Aaqib Javed got the job on an interim basis and is now reportedly set to be fired once the tournament ends, too.

Similarly, Sarfaraz Ahmed, who led the 2017 title charge as the captain, was sacked in 2019. Babar Azam served a big run before resigning from all formats after the 2023 World Cup.

Shan Masood became the Test captain and Shaheen Afridi the T20I skipper. However, after Afridi’s poor performance in one series against New Zealand, Babar Azam was reappointed as ODI and T20I captain. He resigned again only six months later and the incumbent, Mohammad Rizwan took over.

The instability reflected in Pakistan’s performances in bilateral series in the last couple of years.
